After completing the game with 120 Power Stars, I decided to see if I could get every point in each area. If you have a better high score in any course, please email me!!!

I will be adding tips to get each star - they will follow the general tips for each course. These are done for courses 1-14. 08/15/98
I will try to get the star tips for course 15 in soon. 08/15/98

Thanks to Larry Brown for pointing out that Tall, Tall, Mountain had 4 coins from bombs not 3, and so the new high score is 136 not 135. (Of course, it took me about 90 minutes to get all 136 in one shot - but it had been about 3 months since I had last played) Thanks Larry!!!

This is page 1, covering courses 1-5 in detail. However, the links in the list of courses above, and the links in the Best Scores Table below, will bring in one of the other pages if necessary.

In case anyone doesn't realize it, there are 120 power stars. 6 in each course, 1 bonus star in each course if you get 100 coins, and 15 power stars in secret courses and other areas. After you get 120 power stars, there are some cool things you can do. See the Fun Stuff section.

WARNING:This site contains SPOILER information. If you do not want anything given away, then just look at the 1st table with the my best scores for each course. If you want a breakdown of the scoring detail for each course, you can click on the course number at the top of the page, or click on the course name in the best scores table. The detailed scoring table for each course has some information that could give a little bit away. Tips for each course have been grouped at the end of the document, so that the detailed scoring tables can be viewed without seeing the tips. There is a link to the tips for each course after it's detailed scoring table.

Note: This page uses tables. If you are using a browser that does not support tables, then I strongly suggest you get one that does. Hopefully, at this point almost everybody is using a browser that supports tables.

If you do not have one of the newer browsers, try downloading one of these.

Here are my high scores for each course, and the highest scores that I think are possible.

Michael Dolejsi confirms the 137 possible in Tall, Tall Mountain, and claims 191 in Tiny-Huge Island. He suggests that the 5 point difference between Volker's score and his, is the 5 coins you can get from running around the post on the island. See Details. 01/24/00

Tips Section: Warning - this section contains Spoiler Information that will give parts of the game away.

Tips for Course 1: Bob-omb Battlefield:

Section last updated: 08/02/97

  1. To get the blue coin, jump on the koopa (the turtle) and then jump on him again while he is out of his shell. You can also jump on the shell and ride it. If you jump on the shell before jumping on the koopa, just run him over and the blue coin will pop out. Then just ride over the blue coin to collect it.

  2. To get the 45 coins in the air, shoot up to the island in the sky with the cannon. If you don't have the ability to get the winged cap so that you can fly, it will be hard if not impossible to get all 45 coins in the sky.

  3. There are 5 yellow coins hidden in each of the 5 wooden posts. Just run around each post 5 times to make the coins appear. Sounds easy right? Well... It is, except for the wooden post that the Chain Chomp is chained to....

  4. Fun note: If you pick up the little bomb by Chain Chomp, run up to Chain Chomp (you may need to jump once) and throw the little bomb under Chain Chomp, he will get blasted straight up in the air to the end of his chain, and be stunned for just about 1 or 2 seconds. I thought it was kind of funny.
STARS for course 1:
  1. BIG BOB-OMB ON THE SUMMIT: Up to the top of the mountain, grab the Big Bob-omb from behind and throw him on the ground (not over the edge) three times.
  2. FOOTRACE WITH KOOPA THE QUICK: Race Koopa up the mountain. Beat him to the flag to get the star.
  3. SHOOT TO THE ISLAND IN THE SKY: Go across the first bridge, jump in the cannon, and shoot up to the island. The star is in the yellow box.
  4. FIND THE 8 RED COINS: Find all 8 red coins to get this star.
  5. MARIO WINGS TO THE SKY: Get back to the island in the sky, and blast through the 5 rings of coins. This is easy if you have the wing cap so you can fly. Get it before you jump in the cannon.
  6. BEHIND CHAIN CHOMP'S GATE: Do a pound the ground stomp on the wood post that Chain Chomp is chained to, 3 or 4 times until it is flat. The gate will open so you can get the star.

Tips for Course 2: Whomp's Fortress:

Section last updated: 08/04/97

  1. To get the coins from the small boxes, pick them up and throw them against a wall.

  2. To get all 10 coins from each of the 2 the walking stone slabs, you need to run in front of them until they fall forward to smash you. Get out of the way before they smash you, and jump on their backs. This will produce 1 coin. Grab it, and repeat the process a total of 5 times to get 5 coins. Then, after it won't give you any more single coins, do a 'Pound the Ground' jump to destroy the whomp, and get 5 more coins for a total of 10 per whomp.

  3. There are 4 blue coins that appear when you 'Pound the Ground' on the blue coin block, and there are 3 more in the sleeping Piranha Flowers. To get the 3 from the plants, I did a back flip to land on top of them. They must be sleeping before and during your back flip, or they will bite you instead of dying and giving up a blue coin.
STARS for course 2:
  1. CHIP OFF WHOMP'S BLOCK: Run up to the top of the fortress. Run in front of the huge slab, but get out of the way when he tries to smash you. Do a pound the ground jump on his back. Do it 3 times.
  2. TO THE TOP OF THE FORTRESS: Just like it says - go up to the top of the tower at the top of the fortress, and get the star.
  3. SHOOT INTO THE WILD BLUE: Jump in the cannon, and look for the flag pole. Under the flag pole, there is another ledge. Shoot between the two left pillars, climb down the pole, and get the star.
  4. RED COINS ON THE FLOATING ISLE: Get all 8 red coins. There is one that is a little tricky to find - jump up on the upper blue whomp - it is above him!
  5. FALL ONTO THE CAGED ISLAND: Jump up into the tree where you first enter, and climb to the top. An owl will fly out of the tree. You need to hitch a ride from the owl, and then fall on the floating isle with the star.
  6. BLAST AWAY THE WALL: Jump into the cannon, and you will see two walls on either side of the slide down into the water. Aim for the upper right hand corner of the right wall. Blast it away to reveal the star.

Tips for Course 3: Jolly Roger Bay:

Section last updated: 08/04/97

  1. I have not found a purpose for the sliding treasure chest on the deck of the ship. Email me if you find one.

  2. There are 8 coins arranged in a circle around one of the 3 towers just under the water.
STARS for course 3:
  1. PLUNDER IN THE SUNKEN SHIP: Swim down to the sunken ship, and just in front of the giant eel whose head is coming out a window. Swim back to the surface for air, and then back down. The eel should now be swimming around. Swim into the window it was just in, and swim up to each of the four treasure chests, in the proper order. You get shocked if you do it wrong. If you get shocked, you must start the sequence of opening the four chests again. Watch your air - there is an air bubble at the opposite end of the ship. When you get all four chests open, the ship surfaces, leaving the inside dry. Run up and hit the yellow box for the star.
  2. CAN THE EEL COME OUT AND PLAY?: Swim just in front of the giant eel - this time his head is sticking out of a cave. When the eel comes out of the cave, grab the star off of his tail - but don't touch him. He is an electric eel!
  3. TREASURE OF THE OCEAN CAVE: Swim into the big cave back where the ship was, and you will find a blue coin block, and 4 more treasure chests. Same deal as before - open them in the proper order for the star.
  4. RED COINS ON THE SHIP AFLOAT: Get all 8 red coins. There is one above a pillar, 4 in clam shells, and 3 on the ship.
  5. BLAST TO THE STONE PILLAR: Jump into the cannon, and find the 3 pointed pillars. Aim above the left one, and grab it when you get there. Now, go to the top, do a handstand, and back flip to ledge to the left of the pillar. The star is in the yellow box.
  6. THROUGH THE JET STREAM: You need the metal cap for this one. Get the metal cap, and you can run across the ocean floor to the jet stream, and get the star. Without the metal cap, you can't swim to the star - at least I couldn't. There is a green block for the metal cap (if you have already jumped on the green metal cap switch) in the cave with the treasure chests, and also by the purple switch up by the ship. Either can be used to get this star, but you have to hurry once you have the cap.

Tips for Course 4: Cool, Cool Mountain:

Section last updated: 08/15/97

  1. On the snow ramp leading down to the mama penguin, a snowman will pop up and start throwing snowballs at you. If you run around the snowman several times, he will start to lean, and then will fall on his side. 3 coins pop out.

  2. You can do the penguin race several times until you collect all the coins - just make sure you get the blue one on the first try, before it rolls off the edge of the ramp.

  3. If you jump on the helicopter heads, Mario will start twirling around for a few seconds, as well as releasing 3 coins.
STARS for course 4:
  1. SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY: Jump into the chimney in the cabin, and slide down the icy ramps to the bottom. Out the door and get the star.
  2. LI'L PENGUIN LOST: Pick up the little penguin above the cabin at the upper level, and carry him down to it's mother, in the pond, near by where you got the 1st star.
  3. BIG PENGUIN RACE: Back into the chimney of the cabin at the top. This time, there is a big penguin there, talk to it, and then race it to the bottom. Beat it to the bottom to get the star.
  4. FROSTY SLIDE FOR 8 RED COINS: Get all 8 red coins. There are 2 above trees, 2 on wood bridges, 2 next to walls (1 near the snowman's head, and 1 at the opposite end of the area with the mother penguin relative to the cannon), 1 at the top of the escalator, and the final one is on an ice ridge that you have to jump to from one of the icy bridges near the top at an upper level (look over the edge before you jump, to make sure it is there).
  5. SNOWMAN'S LOST HIS HEAD: Get next to the big snowball up by the cabin at the top. It will talk to you. Race it down to the Snowman's head, and stand next to the snowman's head so that you are between the snowman's head and the big snowball coming down behind you. This will make the big snowball change it's course and hit the snowman's head, making it an actual snowman. Talk to it, and get the star.
  6. WALL KICKS WILL WORK: Get to the area by the penguin's mother. Jump in the cannon (The Bob-omb buddy to open the cannon is halfway up the escalator). Shoot across the gap to the tree. Follow around until you get to the arrow made of coins. Jump across the gap, and you will find an area with a spinning heart that restores health. This is where you must do wall kicks to get to the top of this area, and then walk (or crawl) across a very narrow ice bridge to the last star.

Tips for Course 5: Big Boo's Haunt:

Section last updated: 08/15/97

  1. To get to course 5, go through either of the door's on the main level on either side of the stairs. Go down the long hallway (with the big ghost), and through the door at the end. In this outdoor area, you will find a slightly bigger ghost that has some kind of cage or barrel inside, instead of a yellow coin. Stomp him to make him give up the barrel, which is a gateway to course 5. You have to stomp him when he is not looking at you, so that he is visible.
  2. If you get the Vanish cap in the room with 2 red stars above the bookcases, you can get through the painting to the room at the back of the ghost house, without running around to the back door.
  3. There are 21 blue coins.
    • 11 are from the little Boos (ghosts). Just do a 'pound the ground' stomp on them.
    • 4 are from a blue coin block up in the attic. Just 'pound the ground' stomp it.
    • 3 are from running around the eyeballs until they get dizzy.
    • 3 are from the books with huge jaws that come out of some of the bookcases. Punch or kick these.

  4. I have not been able to get anything from the killer piano, or from the flying chairs. If you do, please email me.
STARS for course 5:
  1. GO ON A GHOST HUNT: Pound the ground stomp on all of the little boos (ghosts) on the 1st level. Each contains a blue coin. When you have done this, a big boo will appear on the main floor of the ghost house. Stomp him 3 times to get the star. A staircase to the upper level will appear.
  2. RIDE BIG BOO'S MERRY-GO-ROUND: Get to the merry-go-round. You can do this by riding down on the elevator platform in the separate small house, or by falling off of some places on the 1st floor. Ride around the merry-go-round until small boos appear. Stomp on 5 of them, and then stomp 3 times on the big boo that will appear.
  3. SECRET OF THE HAUNTED BOOKS: Up the stairs that appeared after the 1st star, and to the left and through the door in the far wall (go past one door). In this room are bookcases. Run by them until the dead end (no pun intended) and hit the 3 books that are sticking out in the proper order. This will slide the end bookcase away, revealing a door to the star.
  4. SEEK THE 8 RED COINS: Get all 8 red coins. There are 4 on the 1st floor (2 above bookcases, 1 by the killer piano, and 1 in the open), and 4 on the 2nd floor (2 in the coffins, 1 in the room with the floor made of wire, and 1 in the open).
  5. BIG BOO'S BALCONY: Up the stairs and to the right to the door in the far wall (skip 1 door), in this room, are some bookcases. Do a wall kick on the wall opposite the bookcases, and jump up to a ledge with a door. Through that door is the attic. Go into the attic, and through another door to the balcony over the front entrance. Stomp the Big Boo there 3 times, and the star will appear on the roof. Run up the roof ( I did it to the right of the balcony as you look at it) to the ridge at the top of the roof. Follow the ridge around until you can get to the star.
  6. EYE TO EYE IN THE SECRET ROOM: Get to the attic like you did for star 5, but before you get there, you must be wearing the blue Vanish cap. Jump through the painting in the attic, and run around the giant eyeball until it gives up the star. To get the vanish cap (assuming you have hit the vanish cap switch), go past and around the bookcases to the door in the room next door. Through that door is a balcony with a blue cap box. Get the vanish cap, run back around the bookcases, do the wall kick up to the attic, and get through the painting. You must do this very fast, or the vanish cap will wear off before you get through the painting.
