WARNING:This site contains SPOILER information. If you do not want anything given away, then just look at the 1st table with the my best scores for each course. If you want a breakdown of the scoring detail for each course, you can click on the course number at the top of the page, or click on the course name in the best scores table. The detailed scoring table for each course has some information that could give a little bit away. Tips for each course have been grouped at the end of the document, so that the detailed scoring tables can be viewed without seeing the tips. There is a link to the tips for each course after it's detailed scoring table.

Note: This page uses tables. If you are using a browser that does not use tables, then I strongly suggest you get one that does. Hopefully, at this point almost everybody is using a browser that supports tables.

If you do not have one of the newer browsers, try downloading one of these.

Tips Section: Warning - this section contains Spoiler Information that will give parts of the game away.

Tips for Course 6: Hazy Maze Cave:

Section last updated: 09/10/97

  1. There are 7 blue coins from the blue coin block in the poison gas maze, and there are 2 from the eyeballs in the cave with the red coins. Both eyeballs can be done, but I found these difficult, especially the one in the corner. You can try and stop the moving platform on the corner next to this eyeball, and run around the eyeball where you have room, and jump to the platform and back around the eyeball at the corner. Remember, the platform disappears if you don't touch it after a few seconds, so be very quick. Good luck, this was one of the hardest things to get in Super Mario, at least for me.

  2. There are two bats in the main cave with the 8 red coins, 4 in the poison gas maze, 1 in the cave with the giant rolling boulders, 2 in a hallway on the way to and elevator, and 2 in the hallway with fire shooters.

  3. The entrance to the green cap switch section is in this course.
STARS for course 6:
  1. SWIMMING BEAST IN THE CAVERN: Find the underground lake (take the left path from the entrance, past the rolling boulders, down the elevator), and swim to the beast in the lake. Crawl up on his back. Steer the beast (look left go left, look right to go right, look straight to go straight) and point him at the island. Pound the ground stomp on his back to stop and flatten him. Run up his neck to his head, then jump to the island with the star.
  2. ELEVATE FOR 8 RED COINS: Find the main cavern (take the right path from the entrance), and get the 8 red coins. Some are in boxes that you can punch or stomp on. There are 4 that you get to by riding the upper moving platform, and 4 that you get riding the lower moving platform. The lower platform can be guided by stepping on the 4 arrows on it.
  3. METAL-HEAD MARIO CAN MOVE: Go to the lake - but get the metal cap first. Quickly follow the path into the lake and keep following it underwater until you run up and step on the purple switch. This opens the gate to a door to the star.
  4. NAVIGATING THE TOXIC MAZE: Go to the toxic maze. Look for an opening in the wall of the maze that is above eye level. It is near the opening in A-MAZE-ING EMERGENCY EXIT (see next star), in the same wall (If you can't find this one, do the next star first - this one is just a little farther down the maze from where the trail of blue coins end). If you are observant, you will notice that there are 3 or 4 toxic slime trails that ooze down the wall, but start down from halfway up the wall. That halfway point is the floor of the opening. Jump up and climb into it, go down the hall, up the elevator to the star.
  5. A-MAZE-ING EMERGENCY EXIT: Go to the toxic maze. Look for an opening in the wall of the maze that is above eye level. If you jump on the blue switch block, you can follow the trail of blue coins to the opening. Jump up and crawl into the opening, down the hall, up the elevator, and go to the area above the black hole that the boulders roll into. Jump up, grab the wire mesh, and follow it to the star.
  6. WATCH FOR ROLLING ROCKS: Go to the area with the rolling boulders. At the top of the slope, by the door, do wall kicks to get up to an opening in the wall. If the star isn't there, jump across the gap to the opening on the other side.

NOTE: Thanks to Erik for pointing out that I had reversed stars 4 and 5 above. I have updated the description of both, and they are now in the proper order. THANKS ERIK!!

Tips for Course 7: Lethal Lava Land:

Section last updated: 08/20/97

  1. There are two sections to this course. The main one, and then the one inside the volcano. To get all the points, you must get everything in the first section, then jump into the volcano, and get the rest. There are 24 yellow coins in the volcano in the open, and 2 more from Bullys. The two points that I have not been able to get (yet) in this course are from the two bullys in the volcano. If you push them off the path, they fall way down into the lava, and that makes the coin that pops out kind of hard to get!!! Especially since you would have to jump blindly to grab the coin after it bounces up when the bully hits lava. If you have done this - Email me and let me know. I think one bully could be pushed to a lower level, but the other one can't.

  2. The easiest way to grab most of the coins, is to get the turtle shell from the yellow ! box, and ride it all over the place. It is about the only way to get some things, like the 5 yellow coins under the draw bridge. The yellow ! box appears on the island by the arch, near the entrance, after you have the first 4 stars.

  3. If you run around on the area where the red coins are, where the pieces of the puzzle are sliding around, then 5 yellow coins appear in the middle of the puzzle.

  4. Before you pick up the jumping box, make sure you are aimed at something you can land on, instead of landing in the lava. I aimed for the platform with the 3 bullies.

  5. There is a warp from underneath the eyeball to the island with the red cap block.
STARS for course 7:
  1. BOIL THE BIG BULLY: Get to the Big Bully on the island on the other side of the volcano. Stomp him off the edge, and stairs will appear that lead to the star. Run up them fast!!
  2. BULLY THE BULLIES: Go to the large island with the 3 small bullies on it. Stomp them over the edge, and a big bully appears. Stomp him over the edge for the star.
  3. 8-COIN PUZZLE WITH 15 PIECES: Go to the puzzle with the shifting pieces, to the left of the volcano. Collect the 8 red coins without falling into the lava.
  4. RED-HOT LOG ROLLING: Go to the giant log behind the mesh to the right of the volcano. Jump on the edge closest to the star (away from the wall) to make it roll until you can get on the path to the star.
  5. HOT-FOOT-IT INTO THE VOLCANO: Jump into the volcano (or ride the shell up it). You will land on an island. You have to jump to an island, in the direction of the lava falls, and the longer island. Follow the path around the inside edge of the volcano to the star at the top.
  6. ELEVATOR TOUR IN THE VOLCANO: Go back into the volcano, and this time go the other way over a few islands to the elevator slab. Ride it (and another) up to the pole and jump to it. Do a handstand at the top and jump to the next pole, without getting burned by the revolving shooting fire. A few more steps to the star.

Tips for Course 8: Shifting Sand Land:

Section last updated: 08/24/97

  1. There are two sections to this course. The main one, and then the one inside the pyramid. To get all the points, you must get everything in the first section, then get into the pyramid, and get the rest.

  2. Before you pick up the jumping box, make sure you are aimed at something you can land on, instead of landing in the quicksand.

  3. The easiest way to do several things in this area is to ride the turtle shell, which is in the yellow ! box on the upper level of the stone pavillion, near the start of the course. There is also a red flying cap box here, and this is also where the star appears when you get the 8 red coins. When you are on the turtle shell, you can run over quicksand, the cactus, etc. - just don't run into a wall or something solid, or you will be knocked off. You can climb the pillars on the shell, but the tornadoes will knock you off the shell.
STARS for course 8:
  1. IN THE TALONS OF THE BIG BIRD: Get to the opposite side of the pyramid, by the pond. Run up to the top of the pillar, jump up and hit the big bird when it gets close, and it will release the star.
  2. SHINING ATOP THE PYRAMID: Get to the star near the top of the pyramid. Follow the ledges around the pyramid.
  3. INSIDE THE ANCIENT PYRAMID: Get to the lowest ledge at the base of the pyramid, and go down the ramp into it. Climb up to the hightest level inside, and get the star at the top.
  4. STAND TALL ON THE FOUR PILLARS: Get to the top of each pillar, stand there for a second, and jump up and get the coin that is above each pillar. When you do this on the 4th pillar, the top of the pyramid blows off. Get to the top of the pyramid, and jump in. You will land on a platform, that will lower you, and when it stops, there is a door into the big red box in the center of the pyramid. Go through the door, down the ramp, jump up on the steps, and 2 giant rock hands appear. Punch each one in the eye (in the palm), while it is open, 3 times each (of course). I do the start of this one by riding the turtle shell up each pillar, and then ride it up into the top of the pyramid, but there are other ways of doing it. Make sure you have a few extra lives before doing this star. If you get to the hands and are defeated, you will restart inside the pyramid, as long as you have lives left.
  5. FREE FLYING FOR 8 RED COINS: Find the 8 red coins. One in the box, one in the pond, 2 in the open, and 4 in the air. To get to the four in the air, the easiest way is to fly from the top of a pillar close by. You need the red flying cap of course. When you have all 8, the star appears on the upper level of the stone area, near where you start, where you also can get the turtle shell.
  6. PYRAMID PUZZLE: Go back into the pyramid, and back up to the top, to the platform right before you get to star # 3 (INSIDE THE ANCIENT PYRAMID). Look over the edge, and you will see a yellow coin on a platform below you. Carefully jump down to the platform and get the coin. Now look over the edge of this platform, and see another below. Jump to it, and then do the same thing to get to the third platform with a coin. Now, jump down to the chute that the sand is pouring into, where there is another yellow coin. Get it, and follow the chute to the 5th yellow coin, and when you get it the star will appear at the end of the chute. Get the star, but be careful. It is hard to jump up out of the sand, and if you miss the star and go over the edge.....

Tips for Course 9: Dire, Dire Docks:

Section last updated: 08/31/97

  1. There are 42 coins under water in the first cave, and 13 more in the second cave.
STARS for course 9:
  1. BOARD BOWSER'S SUB: Swim through the tunnel to the second chamber. Step on the purple switch, climb the blocks onto the sub, and get the star.
  2. CHESTS IN THE CURRENT: Open the four chests in the proper order.
  3. POLE-JUMPING FOR RED COINS: Swim through the tunnel to the second chamber. Step on the purple switch, climb up the other blocks onto the platform. Ride the moving poles, jumping from one to another when necessary, to get the red coins.
  4. THROUGH THE JET STREAM: Swim through the tunnel to the second chamber. Coming out of the floor, you will see several rings floating towards the surface. Swim through 5 of them in a row. The star will appear on the floor. You will need the green metal cap to get this star.
  5. THE MANTA RAY'S REWARD: Follow the Manta ray, and swim through 5 rings in a row that are forming behind him.
  6. COLLECT THE CAPS: Swim through the tunnel to the second chamber. Get both the green metal cap and the blue vanish cap, and then get the star in the cage at the bottom of the pool, by the side.

Tips for Course 10: Snowman's Land:

Section last updated: 09/10/97

  1. If you run around the snowmen that pop up and throw snowballs at you, they will fall over and give up 3 coins.

  2. There are no blue coins in this course - at least not that I have found.

  3. If you jump up on the big penguins head, at the start of the ice bridge, you can ride on top of him to the other side.

  4. The Bob-omb buddy to open the cannon is in the igloo area.
STARS for course 10:
  1. SNOWMAN'S BIG HEAD: Climb to the top of giant snowman, across the ice bridge, and climb up to the star at the top. Hold on to your hat while crossing the ice bridge!! You can either jump up on the penguins head to cross, or walk next to him so the Snowman doesn't blow you off the bridge.
  2. CHILL WITH THE BULLY: Jump on the bully, up on the ice pad, until you knock him off the edge. Don't let him knock you off first!! Also, see my Fun Stuff section for a different approach!!
  3. IN THE DEEP FREEZE: Solve the puzzle of the path through the giant block of ice, near where you get into this area.
  4. WHIRL FROM THE FREEZING POND: The idea here is to go down to the pond at the far end of the course. There is a brick wall on the far side that you need to get over, but you can't jump to it. You need to jump on the head of the first Helicopter head that is in the pond, and then twirl across the pond and over the wall. You can't wait for him to climb out of the pond, or you won't make it to the wall, so you have to jump on him quick. Once over the wall, there are two yellow ! boxes. The one on the right has a shell, and the one on the left has the star. An alternative to twirling over the wall, is to climb the tree near the pond (the one that the warp takes you to, and do a back flip up onto the snow wall. You can't flip on top of the wall, but if you land almost on the top, and jump like crazy a few times, you can get on top of the snow wall. Then, you can follow the path around the pond and past the brick wall, to get the star. This may be harder than doing it the proper way - but it does work.
  5. SHELL SHREDDIN' FOR RED COINS: Hit the yellow ! box next to the one where you got the last star in WHIRL FROM THE FREEZING POND (yes, you have to get over the wall again!!), and get the koopa shell. Ride this shell and follow the path of red coins, and then get to the "pond of instant death" that is under the ice pad with the bully. Get the two red coins there as soon as you can, because you can only get them riding the shell. Then get the rest of the 8 coins for the star.
  6. INTO THE IGLOO: On the side of the Big Snowman, there is a tiny Igloo that leads to an area with the last star. You can get there by 1) riding the shell across the pond next to the pond with the brick wall, up the ramp with about 10 yellow coins, and up to the igloo, or 2) jump over the wall that separates the igloo from the plateu before you walk up the wood path around the base of the snowman, or 3) cross the ice bridge in front of the snowman, look down until you see the igloo, and jump down to it. Once you get there, CRAWL through the igloo. Inside, you will find lots of coins, the Bob-omb buddy to open the cannon, and the star - between two walls of ice. Get the vanish cap to go through the clear ice walls. You have to climb over a clear wall near the blue vanish cap block that does not reach the ceiling, to get to the vanish cap.
