Basic Hints for Secret Stars:

There are 15 Secret Stars. Here are the basic hints if you just want a little help - the detailed tips follow the basic hints .
- 4 are from the secret courses just for fun.
- 3 are from the areas where you battle bowser.
- 3 are from the areas where you find the switches for the caps.
- 5 are from things that will talk to you - if you do the right thing first.

Detailed Tips for Secret Stars:

From the main entrance, up the stairs, and to the door on the right. Down the hall, and through the stained glass window on the right. Down the slide, hit the box, get the star.

Do this again, but get down the slide in under 21 seconds, for a different secret star.

In the entrance to Jolly Roger Bay, the room with the aquariums, there are two square holes up in the walls. 1 has a 1-up mushroom, the other has a secret area. Swim for the 8 red coins, and then get the star.

From the main entrance, up the stairs, to the left to the door with the big star on it. You must have 8 Stars to get through this door. Collect the 8 red coins for the secret star. Then, jump in the warp pipe for the 1st battle with Bowser. Grab him by the tail, swing him around, and throw him into one of the mines (bombs) around the circle. When you defeat him, he will give you the key to the lower level.

In the area where you find the Flying Cap Switch (red)
In the area where you find the Vanish Cap Switch (blue)
In the lower level, after you have 15 stars, a rabbit will appear. Catch that bunny!! This was a pain for me - put you can do it.
In the lower level, at the entrance to Hazy Maze Cave (the pool of liquid metal), talk to the mushroom person.
In the area where you find the Metal Cap Switch (green)
In the lower level, through the door with the big star on it (you must have 30 stars to get through this door), is the entrance to Dire, Dire, Docks. Jump through the wall of water. After you get the first star from the top of Bowser's sub, the wall of water you jumped through to get there will move back, revealing a hole to the secret area with the second key and another star. Get the 8 red coins for the star, and defeat Bowser to get the key to the upper level.
Back up to the main hall, then up the stairs to the door with the keyhole. Through the door with the key, and up the stairs. In the hall talk to the mushroom people. The one under the next flight of stairs has the star.
Up the flight of stairs to the door with the big star (you need 50 stars to get through this door), and in to the room with the clock. Talk to the mushroom person for the star.
In the lower level, after you get 50 stars, and have caught the bunny the first time....HE'S BACK!!!! So, go down to the lower level and catch him again!!
In the same room with the clock, there are two side areas. Once is course 15, the other is a secret area with a secret star.
Back to the highest level, in the final area on way to the final battle with Bowser. You must have 70 stars to get up the endless stairs.

Cap Switches:

Vanish Cap Switch (Blue) - In the lower level, through the door to the room with the two pillars. Pound the ground on them to drain the moat. Go out through the door, and follow the moat until you find the square hole in the ground. Jump in - this is the entrance to the Vanish Cap switch area, and 8 red coins for a secret star.
Metal Cap Switch (Green) - In Hazy Maze Cave, in the area with the swimming sea serpent (or dinosaur) there is a door to the Metal Cap switch area, and 8 red coins for a secret star.
Flying Cap Switch (Red) - In the main entrance, on the floor, is a slightly lower area, with a picture of the sun on the floor. After you have at least 10 stars, stand there, and look up at the sun, and you will transport to the Flying Cap switch area, where you need to jump on the red switch. Get out of the area after you practice flying, and then stand and look at the sun again to enter the area again. Pull back on the stick as you first enter the area, and then follow the path of coins around, making sure to get each red coin on the first pass, or you will have to try again. The 8 red coins get you the secret star.

Warps:

Warps are spots that transport Mario from one point to another. Most warps are two way - meaning you can transport either way. There are a few that are one way warps - I will indicate these when they are described.

Course 1:
(1) From the flower bed past the first bridge, to the flower bed past Chain Chomp.
(2) From the lower cave to the upper, on the way to the top of the mountain.
Course 2: From the corner of the area by the blue stomping whomps, to the corner of the area with the flag pole
Course 3:
Course 4: From the end of the broken bridge up at the top, near the cabin, to the end of the bridge at the lowest level, near where the big penguin is.
Course 5:
Course 6:
Course 7: From the cage under the eyeball to the island with the red block with the flying cap.
Course 8:
(1) From the base of the palm tree by the pond, to the path by the cannon.
(2) Inside the pyramid, from next to the first of the poles, after you climb up it through a hole, to the top of the net over the 8 coins in a circle and the zapper guy - this is a one way warp only.
Course 9:
Course 10: From one of the trees (the second) as you move from the entrance, to a tree down by the far pond.
Course 11: From the top of the tower with the cannon, at one corner, to the bottom of the column that kind of has steps up to the top. This tower has one of those shocker balls in orbit around the top of the tower. This is a two way warp if the water level is at the bottom. It is a one way warp if you warp from the cannon and end up under water.
Course 12: From the small mushroom near the large one with a red coin and the one with the yellow ! box, to the path by the cannon.
Course 13: From the island that you can get to after stepping on the purple switch and making the blocks appear, back near the switch, next to the warp pipe. This is a one way warp.
Course 14:
Course 15: On the balcony outside the house in the sky, there is a warp to the top of the area above where the 8 red coins are. This may be a one way warp.

Fun Stuff:

This section is to list things that are "just for fun". Some of these things are kind of cool, some may be bugs in the game - it is hard to say.

In course 1, Bob-omb Battlefield, if you pick up the little bomb by Chain Chomp, run up to Chain Chomp (you may need to jump once) and throw the little bomb under Chain Chomp, he will get blasted straight up in the air to the end of his chain, and be stunned for just about 1 or 2 seconds.
In course 8, Shifting Sand Land, there is a way to get Mario to be holding the winged cap in his hand - he can even fly with it in his hand instead of on his head. First, let the giant bird knock off Mario's hat, then go through the warp several times, between the tree and the cannon, then go get the hat. I need to do this one again to get the exact details, but if you do it right, you can fly with the winged cap in Mario's hand, instead of on his head.
In course 10, Snowman's Land, there is a way to get Mario to be holding his cap in his hand, while he has another on his head. First, go up and let the giant snowman blow Mario's hat off. Then, go through the warp between the trees several times. Then, go find the hat - instead of just one, it will look like a stack of hats - more than 1 had on top of another. Pick it up, and you can have one on Mario's head, and one in his hand.
In course 10, Snowman's Land, CHILL WITH THE BULLY, there is a glitch (no - not like the one from ReBoot) that is kind of cool. If you go up the ramp, and stop on the left side of the ramp just as you get to the ice pad, the bully will charge you, but he has to stop at the edge of the pad. He will be running in place if he doesn't bump you. Move up slowly until he does bump you, which will knock you backwards. Now go back up the ramp (carefully), and you will notice that the bully is actually off of the ice pad. Watch him for a minute, and he will eventually walk off the side of the ramp, die, and the star will appear in the middle of the icepad, without having to defeat him! In course 12, Tall, Tall, Mountain, if you let the cloud blow Mario's hat off, and then go down and grab the monkey by the pool and the rolling log, you can carry him all over the place - even into the pool. Not that cool, but if anybody finds out you can do something with him, let me know.
In course 13, Tiny-Huge Island, there are three places where butterflies appear. At the start of Huge Island, by the fenced in area where Koopa the Quick is, and near the tree where the path/bridge to the bottom of Wiggler's cave is. (I am not sure which Island they are in for the last two). If you stomp on the butterflies, a big black balloon will appear. This will either be a bomb, or a 1-up mushroom. Sometimes the black balloon with the bomb will follow/chase you (I saw this happen by the tree). There are other areas with butterflies - this works on some but not all.
After you have all 120 stars:
- You can climb into the cannon outside the castle, where you first start the game. This cannon had a grate over it so you couldn't climb into it. However, after you have 120 stars, the grate is gone, and you can use it. Blast up to the top of the castle, and you will find our old friend Yoshi. Talk to him, and he will give you a surprise.
- In course 4, Cool, Cool, Mountain, if you go back after you have 120 stars, and go to the penguin race, the penguin is now HUGE!!.
