1970-1971 back to back National Champs (24-0-1)
1994-1995 back to back National Champs (25-0)
1997 Co-National Champs (13-0)
1993-1997 Best 5 year record in NCAA History (60-3)
Home of the best option quarterback ever: Tommie Frazier
And another great QB: Scott Frost - the 1st Husker to both rush and pass for 1000 yards in the same season, and only the 12th person in NCAA Division 1 history to do it. (or maybe only the 10th - depending on who you listen to!)
Home of the best Coach ever: Dr. Tom Osborne. 60-3 in his last 5 years with 3 National Championships. 255-49-3 overall. Always 9 wins. Never more than 3 losses. Thanks Coach for an awesome 25 years!!
This page is dedicated to a big Husker fan, my Dad. He is the greatest, and we used to listen to games when I was a kid back in Omaha, starting back in the Johnny Rodgers days.

Scott Frost, Ahman Green, Joel Makovicka, and Correll Buckhalter rushed for 2 touchdowns each!!
The Huskers played great - and many players got into the game and gained experience. I wish we could have preserved the shutout, but you can't have everything.
The Huskers moved up in the coaches poll from 6th to 5th, passing Florida State, after the 09/06/97 week, which was IDLE for the Huskers. Florida State had a weak performance, and so they dropped under us.
Correll Buckhalter rushed for 2 touchdowns for the 2nd week in a row!! Scott Frost ran for a TD and passed for another to Sheldon Jackson, and Frankie London ran for a TD.
This game is probably the best thing that could have happened to the Huskers before the Washington game, even though I would have preferred a blowout. I think it is important for Nebraska to have to come from behind a few times, just so that they know they can, and also it will make them work harder this week. I also think it was great that Frankie London got into the game early while it was still in question, and obtained some extremely valuable game experience that may save us down the road if anything should happen to Scott Frost. Frankie London looked (sounded anyway - I only got the Webcast) great.
The Huskers dropped a spot in both polls. They traded places with North Carolina in the AP poll, down to 7th from 6th, and traded places with Florida State in the Coaches poll, down to 6th from 5th. However, there is some good news in the polls - Washington has moved up to #2 in the AP poll, following Penn State, and passing up Florida - and in the coaches poll, Washington remains third behind Florida and Penn State - but is only 21 votes out of 1st and 10 votes out of 2nd. So we will be playing a higher rated team next week than we thought, which is great.
Scott Frost rushed for 97 yards and 2 TDs (34 and 30 yard TD runs), Ahman Green rushed for 129 yards and 1 TD, and Joel Makovicka also rushed for 129 yards. Almost 3 different 100+ yard backs: Scott Frost had over 100 yards but took a knee 3 times to end the game, so he ended up with only 97. Washington was the #1 team in the country against the run - at least before today's game!! Way to go guys!! The main concern I have is Ahman Green - we all hope that his bruised shoulder is not serious, and that he will be back in two weeks against K-State.
This is another great game for the Huskers. Beating the #2 team on their home field should give us a boost in the ratings - especially since both Washington and Tennessee should drop below us, so we should be at least 4th in both polls - maybe higher?? We will see. (In fact, see below!!)
The Huskers moved up to 3rd in both polls, passing Florida State (and North Carolina in the AP poll) again. Florida is 1st in both polls (after beating Tennessee - Florida was 1st and 3rd last week), and Penn State is 2nd. Nebraska had 7 1st place votes in the AP poll, and 3 in the coaches poll. We have next week off, and then take on Kansas State, currently ranked 18th (AP) and 17th (coaches).
Ahman Green rushed for 193 yards and 4 TDs, including TD runs of 7, 25, 50, and 59 yards. Scott Frost rushed for 98 yards and 1 TD. Kansas State was rated 16th and 17th in the polls, was ranked 3rd in total defense, 5th in scoring offense, 11th in rushing offense, and 17th in total offense!! Another great victory!! Also, I guess Ahman recovered from the bruised shoulder he had in the last game!! Kris Brown had 2 FGs. It was great to see Jay Sims back in action - he had a TD, and Joe Walker's 71 YD Interception and a Safety rounded out the scoring.
Still, another great victory for the Huskers. Beating a team ranked in the top 20 in two consecutive games should solidify our spot in the ratings. Do we dare hope that we pass up Penn State?? I certainly do, but we will probably remain 3rd in both polls. However, since Penn State has not played a quality opponent yet - there is a great deal of justification for the Huskers to move up into the #2 spot. Florida, as defending champs, probably deserves to be #1 until they lose, but I think we can easily make a claim to the #2 spot. (or not - see below)
Of course, what do I know. Nebraska does in fact remain 3rd in both polls. If fact, we have 1 less #1 vote in each poll, 6 in the AP and 3 in the coaches. Penn State plays #7 Ohio State next week, so I guess we pull for Ohio State to win for a change.
If it sounds like I am picking on Penn State, all I can say is.....
(Click the image to find out more, if you don't remember)
Ahman Green rushed for 158 yards and 4 TDs in the first half, his 2nd 4 TD game in a row. Sims, Makovicka, and Frost each had 1 TD. Baylor's 1st TD game on an 80 yard run, and their last TD came with no time on the clock after a Nebraska fumble.
Florida lost to LSU, 28-21. Penn State beat Ohio State 31-27. Penn State is the new #1, and the Huskers move up to #2. The Huskers have 14 1st place votes in the AP poll, and 9 in the Coaches Poll.
Q1 NU FG, Brown 32 yards, 14:40
Q2 NU TD, Makovicka 4 yard pass from Frost, 6:51
Q2 NU FG, Brown 41 yards, 12:18
Q3 NU FG, Brown 35 yards, 3:27
Q3 NU TD, Zatechka fell on the ball in the end zone after Ahman Green fumbled (pass failed), 10:01
Q4 NU TD, Green 7 yard run, 3:26
Kris Brown kicked 3 FGs to lead the scoring. Joel Makovicka caught a pass from Scott Frost for 1 TD, John Zatechka scored a TD by falling on the ball after Ahman Green fumbled into the end zone, Ahman Green rushed for another. Scott Frost rushed for 83 yards, and was 5-12 for 46 yards passing, with 1 TD and 1 interception. The Huskers rushed for 400 yards and passed for 46.
The BLACKSHIRTS get the shutout! The defense has been playing well, but this is great! Texas Tech had only 17 yards rushing, and 127 yards total.
Ahman Green rushed 24 times for 178 yards, and has moved to 4th place (from 7th) on the Huskers all time leading rushers list, with a career total of 2873 yards.
Penn State trailed 2-5 Penn State for 56 minutes, and came back to win the game 16-15 with about 4 minutes to go. The Huskers should gain on, and I feel pass up, Penn State in the polls. We will of course see what happens when the results come out.
The Huskers move up to #1 in the Coaches Poll with 28 1st place votes. Penn State falls to 2nd with 29 1st place votes. Total votes were 1496-1482. With the voting this close, we need to continue to win big and keep those shutouts coming!
The Huskers move up to #1 in the AP Poll with 33 1st place votes. Penn State falls to 2nd with 26 1st place votes. Total votes were 1698-1668.
Now the path to another National Championship for the Huskers is clear. They control their own destiny now. Penn State must feel like they are living a nightmare - since this is what happened two years ago - Nebraska passed them up after a poor showing. I wonder if they are sorry they joined the Big Ten, since it locks them out of a potential game with us even if we both remain undefeated.

The BLACKSHIRTS get another shutout! Kansas rushed for only 27 yards, and passed for another 21, for a total of only 48 yards. and only 4 1st downs.

Oklahoma has turned the ball over several times, with Newcombe's TD coming on the 1st play after Wistrom sacked the OU QB, forced and then recovered a fumble.
The boys are having a PARTY!! Great outstanding play by Wistrom, Newcombe, and Makovicka, as well as Frost and Green. Congrats Tom Osborne on a HUGE 250th career victory. This was Oklahoma's worst defeat ever, and the final game in the NU-OU series, at least for a few years.
Makovicka ran for 101 yards and 3 TDs, Buckhalter had 2 TDs, and Frost, Newcombe, Lance Brown, and Miller each had 1 TD.
Ahman Green has now rushed for 1100 yards, moving over the 1000 yard mark with 107 yards today. The Huskers rushed for 409 yards and had 552 total yards.
Florida State passed up Penn State in the coaches Poll. The Huskers increased their 1st place votes from 37 to 50 in the coaches poll, and 36 to 45 in the AP poll.

The offense has played well in the first half, but the defense has given up 24 points. 7 of those were set up after a Scott Frost interception. Time ran out on the Huskers, after a muffed shutgun snap cause time to run out instead of an attempted field goal. Missouri's offense has also played well. I think that the Huskers are respecting Missouri's running game a little too much, and have given up some very long passes to receivers that were wide open. Let's see if they can regroup at halftime.
Newcombe had another key play. After taking over after Missouri downed a punt on about the 4 inch line, Newcombe made a juggling one hand grab for a pickup of 33 yards and a first down. The Huskers scored a TD with Frost going in from the 1 to cap the 99 yard drive.
Scott Frost had a big day. He rushed for 141 yards on 23 carries and 4 TDS (A NU QB record), and passed 11 of 24 for 175 yards. He directed the final regulation drive of 67 yards in 62 seconds, with no timeouts. Ahman Green rushed for 181 yards on 30 carries and 1 TD, his 8th consecutive 100 yard game.
Kris Brown kicked a 44 yard FG in the 4th quarter, his 10th consecutive FG. That is a Nebraska FG record. Way to go Kris Brown. He also kicked 6 extra points.
The biggest play of the game, even overshadowing Newcombe's awesome catch and Scott and Ahman's play, was the final play of the 4th quarter. Frost passed to Wiggins in the end zone, who dropped the ball. But it bounced off of him, and as he was going down his legs flew up, popped the ball into the air, and Matt Davison made an awesome, diving, off the turf grab for the TD. It was about time we got a break, and thank God we got a big one. Kris Brown added the extra point to send us into overtime. Scott Frost scored on a diving 12 yard run in OT, and then Corby Jones was sacked on 4th down to end the game. The defense finally game through with a critical sack.

Well, now that we know what the polls say, I think they are nuts. I can see Florida State being #1, although I don't agree. At least in the coaches poll, first place votes are spread among the top 3. However, they did move Missouri up into the Top 25 after a loss, with a 6-4 record. Go figure. The AP poll is even worse, putting Michigan 1st, after beating a Penn State team that has shown on multiple occasions now that they were not #1 and never should have been. However, we are still undefeated, and if we keep winning and Florida State keeps winning, I think the #1 team in the country will be the winner of NU FSU game in the Orange bowl, no matter what Michigan does. Michigan still has to play Wisconsin and Ohio State - so they may not be #1 for long.
Ahman Green, Scott Frost, and Kris Brown are #13, 14, and 15 in the country in Scoring.
Scott Frost has moved up to #30 in the country in Rushing - not bad for a QB!!
Ahman Green has moved up to #2 on the Huskers career rushing chart with 3290 career yards, passing Calvin Jones. Only Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier is ahead of him with 4780 yards.

Iowa State received the opening kickoff, started at the 12, and went 3 and out. The Huskers started at their own 49 and drove 51 yards in 4 plays for the Ahman Green TD. Iowa state went 3 and out again, and Newcombe returned the punt 53 yards for a TD. This guy does it all. Iowa state goes 3 and out. Nebraska gets the ball on the ISU 49 and Ahman Green went 49 yards in 1 play for the TD. Iowa State goes 3 and out. Nebraska gets the ball on the ISU 39, and Green scores a few plays later, his 3rd TD so far today.
Iowa State burned the defense for a 35 yard TD. I really wanted a shutout today. Newcombe, Makovicka, Frost, Jackson, and Frost again have added 5 more TDs since then, as the Huskers continues to dominate. 63-7 Halftime. The Huskers have 394 yds of total offense, 305 on the ground, in the first half. Green has 142 yds rushing and Frost 88 rushing and 89 passing - in the first half.
Ahman Green rushed for 209 yards on 15 carries, and scored 3 TDs.
Scott Frost is closing in on the 1000 yard mark in both rushing (940 yds) and passing (944 yds). Only 10 players in NCAA division 1 history have done that. Go Scott!! Scott also broke the record for rushing TDs in a season by a QB, which was held by Tommie Frazier with 14. Scott has 16 at this point. Scott also has 2384 career yards passing, 8th on the Huskers charts.
Joel Makovicka has passed up his brother Jeff, in total yards, on his first carry today of 5 yards.
The Huskers played their last home game of the season today. The seniors have played without ever losing a home game during their time at Nebraska.
The Huskers have 6 straight seasons without losing at home.
The Huskers have recorded their 5th 10-win season in a row! They have scored 70 points or more in at least 1 game in each of the last 5 seasons!
The Huskers have won the North Division of the Big 12, and will face Texas A&M in the Big 12 championship on 12/06/97.
There is basically no change in the polls, although we lost a few 1st place votes. Next week we are off, but both Florida State (vs Florida) and Michigan (vs Ohio State) have big games.

The Huskers led 10-3 at the half and were leading 27-10 when Colorado decided they really wanted to play, scoring two touchdown in the last 4 minutes of the game.
Ahman Green rushed for 202 yards on 15 carries, and scored 3 TDs.
Scott Frost has done it, passing the 1000 yard mark in both rushing (1016 yds) and passing (1036 yds). Scott is the 1st Husker QB to do that, and only 12 players in NCAA division 1 history have done it. Scott also extended the record for rushing TDs in a season by a Husker QB. Scott has 17 at this point.
The Huskers have recorded their 5th 11-win season in a row! They have scored 70 points or more in at least 1 game in each of the last 5 seasons!
The Huskers have won the North Division of the Big 12, and will face Texas A&M in the Big 12 championship on 12/06/97.

After a slow start in the first half, the Huskers rushing game has come alive in the 3rd quarter. Scott Frost and Ahman Green are playing great. More important in some ways, is the defense. The Blackshirts have held Tennessee to 9 points in the 1st 3 quarters.
The Huskers continue their domination of the game, with Tennessee's only 2nd half points coming against the reserves in the last minute of the game.
Ahman Green rushed for 206 yards (an Orange Bowl record, and a Nebraska Bowl Record) and 2 TDs, while Scott Frost was 9 for 12 and 125 yards passing, and rushed for 60 yards and 3 TDs. Makovicka carried 9 times for 61 yards, and played a great game even though he was hurting before the game, and had to come out a few times due to pain.
The Blackshirts held Manning to just 134 yards passing.
Regarding the National Championship, Scott Frost said:
"If all the pollsters honestly think after watching the Rose Bowl and watching the Orange Bowl that Michigan could beat Nebraska, go ahead and vote for Michigan by all means. I don't think there's anybody out there with a clear conscience who can say that Nebraska and that great man Tom Osborne doesn't deserve a national championship for this -- at least a share."
Here is what I say:
Huskers Michigan
Record 13-0 12-0
vs current
Top 25 5-0 4-0
Opp win pct 51.6 53.7
Opp Bowl
Record 2-2 0-6
Total Off 513.7 388.5
----Rank 1 44
Total Def 257.3 206.9
----Rank 5 1
Nebraska crushed Tennessee, the #3 team in the country and the SEC champion, by 25 points.
Michigan barely beat Washington State, the #8 team in the country, by only 5 points, and Washington State was driving at the end of the game when the refs let the clock run out when it shouldn't have.
All of the teams that Michigan played that were in Bowl games lost their bowl game.
Half of the teams that Nebraska played that were in Bowl games won their Bowl games. Washington destroyed Michigan State. Kansas State handled Syracuse no problem. Texas A&M, ranked 20th, almost beat UCLA, ranked 5th, and lead the game for 3 quarters.
Since Michigan is part of the Big Ten, and decided that they did not want to be part of the Bowl Alliance that would give us a true National Championship game, they should not expect to be #1 by hiding out in the Rose bowl and playing a lesser team.
Odds makers in Las Vegas say that Nebraska would be favored by 7 points over Michigan if they were to play.
Clearly, the Huskers are the best team in the country. Now we will just have to wait and see what the polls show tomorrow.
