And another great QB: Scott Frost - the 1st Husker to both rush and pass for 1000 yards in the same season, and only the 12th person in NCAA Division 1 history to do it. (or maybe only the 10th - depending on who you listen to!)

Home of the best Coach ever: Dr. Tom Osborne. 60-3 in his last 5 years with 3 National Championships. 255-49-3 overall. Always 9 wins. Never more than 3 losses. Thanks Coach for an awesome 25 years!! The first division 1a coach to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame without waiting for the 3-year waiting period!

This page is dedicated to a big Husker fan, my Dad. He is the greatest, and we used to listen to games when I was a kid back in Omaha, starting back in the Johnny Rodgers days.

I have updated the awards section for 1999 (see the link above). 12/30
The final BCS rankings are out, and we remain 3rd. So, the Fiesta Bowl it is, with the Huskers (3) going up against Tennessee (5). The game is in Tempe, Arizona on January 2nd, and will be carried by ABC at 7pm CST. Florida State (1) and Virginia Tech (2) play for the National Championship on January 4th. Alabama (4) plays Michigan (8) in the Orange. In other games with Big 12 teams, Texas A&M (14) plays Penn State (11) in the Alamo on 12/28/99, Kansas State (6) gets screwed over again, playing an unranked Washington in the Holiday on 12/29/99. On 12/31/99, we have two games with Big 12 teams: Colorado plays Boston College in the Insight.com bowl, and Oklahoma will play Mississippi in the Independence. On January 1st, Texas (15) plays Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. 12/05

Florida State beats Florida at the Swamp, 30-23, and is in the Sugar Bowl. Virginia Tech routed Temple 62-7 (not a big deal maybe - but probably enough to stop us from passing them up. Virginia Tech plays Boston College next week on Friday. 11/21

The Husker move up to 3rd in BCS rankings. 11/15
After the big win over K-State, and the wild day Yesterday, the Husker move up to 4th in the 2 major polls, 3rd in most of the rest, and 1st in the Dunkel ratings. Florida plays Florida State on Saturday. 11/14
Arkansas knocks off Tennessee(3) 28-14, Alabama(13) knocks off Mississippi State(7) 19-7, and Michigan(15) knocks off Penn State(8) 31-27. 11/13
Pittsburg's (and Husker last year) Kris Brown added two field goals of 38 and 28 yards today in the game against the 49ers, setting a league record for the most successful career start by a kicker with 13 field goals in a row. But he missed a 31-yard try in the fourth quarter when the ball hit the right upright and bounced away. Congrats Kris, and thanks for making us proud!! 11/07
Penn State (9-1) gets knocked off 24-23 at home by Minnesota (6-3) on Dan Nystrom's 32-yard field goal as time runs out. Also, Virginia knocks off #7 Georgia Tech, and #8 Mississippi State barely beat Kentucky on Thursday, so the Huskers should move up in the polls. 11/06
Junior Matt Davison reaches the 10th spot on the all time Huskers career pass receiving yards list, with 1014 yards on 67 receptions. Only 10 Huskers have had over 1000 career yards receiving. Read the story here! 11/04
Bobby Newcombe has been named the Big 12 Conference's specialty player of the week for football, after his great game, 86 yard punt return for a TD, and 49 yard catch for a TD against Kansas Read the story here!11/04
The Huskers drop to 8th in the BCS from 7th, after the weak showing against Kansas. It probably won't matter, because beating Texas A&M, Kansas State, Colorado, and the Big 12 Championship game will more than make up for it! And if we don't do all that, it won't matter anyway. The computer polls are what caused us to drop - or rather, they were what was artificially putting us at 7th before last weeks game. 10/30
The Huskers beat Kansas for the 31st straight time - but had to come from behind to do it, and then score again after Kansas tied the game in the 4th qtr. 10/30
Kris Brown kicks his 11th straight NFL FG to become only the 3rd NFL kicker to start his career with 11 straight FGs. Way to go, Kris!! 10/25
Florida State is #1 and Penn State is #2 in the first BCS poll. The Huskers are ranked 7th, Kansas State is 5th, and Texas is 10th, giving the Big-12 3 teams in the BCS top 10. Click here for the BCS poll 10/25
The first BCS poll gets released later tonight, after a wild weekend. 5 of the top 13 teams got knocked off, and both Florida State and Penn State could easily have lost. 10/25
The Huskers now get to the tougher half of the schedule, with 3 of the next 4 games against top 20 opponents (Texas, Texas A&M and Kansas State), and 2 of them currently in the coaches top 10 (Texas A&M and Kansas State, both in Lincoln). I am glad the problems and distractions from the early part of the season are over, and now we can concentrate on the big games. 10/17
The Huskers extend their record consecutive appearance streak in the AP poll to 300 weeks. The last time the Huskers were unranked was Oct. 5, 1981. Florida State has the second longest current streak at 174 weeks. 10/18

The Huskers drop from 4th to 6th in the AP poll, but move up from 6th to 5th in the USA/Coaches Poll. I left them 4th, but Florida passed them up in my poll. The Huskers poor offensive effort for the second game in a row has dropped them to 25th in rushing and 73rd in total offense. Unbelievable. On the plus side, the Blackshirts are 2nd in rushing defense, 6th in pass efficiency defense, 9th in total defense, and 8th in scoring defense. 09/19

Here we go again. The bad news is that DeAngelo Evans has quit the team. This is not good for the Huskers, and I also feel terrible for him, because of all of the injuries he has had. At the same time, Coach Solich has named Eric Crouch the starting QB, with Newcombe moving to share the wingback position with Sean Applegate. I hope Coach Solich knows what he is doing, but I don't have a great feeling about all of this. But we will give it a chance and see how things work out. Dan Alexander will take over from DeAngelo Evans, and I have all the confidence in the world in Dan. Good thing Correll Buckhalter decided to stay as well, since he now moves up to the no. 2 I-Back position, and will be back Saturday after his 1 game suspension for missing practice before the Cal game. 09/14

Correll Buckhalter is still on the team, but will sit out the California game for missing team meetings. The rumor was that he had quit the team, but he remains a critical part of the I-back team. 09/11

Game Comments:

The Huskers are moving the ball well, but penalties and turnovers killed 3 of the first 5 drives.

Eric Crouch scores the first TD of the season on a 28 yard run.

The Huskers lead 7-0 at the half. The offense simply needs to settle down and quit making mistakes. The defense is playing great, and they need to keep up the pressure.

Bobby Newcombe is playing much better in the 3rd quarter, hitting Applegate on a 47 yd TD pass, and rushing for another TD on a 1 yd run, and another TD on the 1st play of the 4th quarter. The defense continues to play strong.

Eric Crouch has a great 4th quarter, adding 2 more TDs on runs of 7 and 21 yards.

The Blackshirts get the defensive shutout, but a blocked punt run back for a TD lets Iowa on the board with just 2:30 left in the game. Congrats Blackshirts on a great game!

Game Comments:

The Huskers dodge a bullet early in the game. After going 3 and out from their own 6, the Huskers punted to Cal, who drove down where the defense finally tightened inside the 20. Cal attempted a 35 yard FG, which hit the left goal post and bounced back no good. Then, the Huskers moved backwards again, with Newcombe getting sacked on the 4. Enter Dan Hadenfeldt, who punts the ball over 85 yards on the fly to put Cal back on their own 22, for a net punt of about 74 yards. Great punt Dan!

The Huskers behind Bobby Newcombe finally get it going with the opening score with :28 seconds left in the 1st quarter.

The QB battle continues with Eric Crouch running for a 1 yd TD.

Then again, maybe not. With :53 seconds left in the 1st half, QB Bobby Newcombe hits QB Eric Crouch for a 60 yard TD pass. Now that is the kind of QB controversy we can handle!!!!!!!!! Eric Crouch becomes the 1st Husker since Johnny Rodgers in 1973 to Run, Pass, and Catch for a TD in the same game. Great job Eric!!

The Huskers dodge another bullet early in the 2nd half. After the Huskers turn the ball over to Cal, Cal attempted another FG, which hit the left goal post AGAIN and bounced back no good.

The Huskers kick a FG, and the Ralph Brown intercepts Cal at the 39 yard line and runs it back to the Cal 4 yd line. Crouch punches it in for the TD on the next play.

The Huskers finally get a rushing TD from the I-back position, with Dan Alexander getting one on a 5 yard run.

The Blackshirts get their shutout this week. Great game guys!

I can't complain about the score, but I find it disturbing that we had only 301 yards of total offense, and only 114 yards on the ground. Yes, you read that right - just 114 yards rushing. We need to get the ground game going way better than that, but this was still a great game.

Game Comments:

Crouch starts his first game of the season, as does Dan Alexander.

The Blackshirts start the scoring with Julius Jackson running a fumble back 16 yards for a TD.

SMU gets on the board and takes the lead with a 45 yd TD drive after Bobby Newcombe fumbles on his first punt return since he was moved from the QB position.

Willie Miller scores his 1st TD, to put the Huskers back in front.

The Huskers missed several opportunities in the 1st half, keeping this a close one at halftime, but the Blackshirts stop a late SMU drive with an interception as time runs out in the half.

Dan Alexander fumbles the pitch from Crouch on the 1st play of the 3rd quarter and the results after a few plays is an SMU TD, and an SMU lead.

Julius Jackson is having a great day, with his 2nd TD of the day on a 28 yard interception return to give the Huskers the lead.

Crouch throws it away again to kill another drive, but the Blackshirts hold and then block the SMU FG attempt. Near the end of the 3rd quarter, as the offense again goes 3 and out, the Huskers have only about 70 yards rushing and 110 yards total offense.

Crouch and the offense finally start moving the ball in the middle of the fourth quarter, moving the ball to midfield, but Alexander fumbles again and SMU takes over on the Huskers 47 yard line with about 6 minutes left. The Blackshirts bail us out again, with Keyuo Craver intercepting. The offense goes 3 and out again. SMU has the ball on their own 40 with 2:38 left. SMU is on the 15 yard line with 1:38 left, when Keyuo Craver intercepts again, to give the Huskers the ball back. Crouch fumbles the ball on the 5 yd line, but falls on it himself. A penalty puts us back on the 2 1/2 yard line. SMU is out of timeouts. And now out of time.

The Blackshirts win this one for the Huskers, both by some key defensive plays to stop SMU drives when they were about to score, and by scoring 2 of the 3 TDs. They also held SMU to 25 yards rushing, sacking Kelly 5 times. Julius Jackson recovered a fumble for a TD and had 2 interceptions, 1 for a TD. Keyuo Craver had 2 inteceptions to stop the last two SMU drives, and also tipped the pass that led to one of Jackson's inteceptions. Considering how much time they spent on the field, I have to say - GREAT JOB BLACKSHIRTS!!! Also, hats off to Dan Hadenfeldt who averaged 49.8 yards on 8 punts, and helped us out a bunch, as did the rest of the special teams.

A win is a win, but I find it hard to believe that the SMU defense was that good. The Huskers offense rushed 41 times for only 119 yards, 6 out of 10 and 66 yards passing, for only 185 yards total offense. And I thought last weeks performance was bad. Only 8 first downs, the fewest in a game in over 30 years. The Huskers, and the coaches - especially Coach Solich - have their work cut out for them on offense. The Huskers need to put all of the garbage over the past few weeks behind them, and get this new offensive setup working. While I hate this kind of game (especially when we don't play that well) - it is important to have a game early where we come from behind a few times, have a close game, and have the defense stop the opponent on their final drive while the game is in question. That may be very valuable later in the season.

And finally, Bobby Newcombe looked flat today, but he had less than a week to prepare for a position he hasn't played in two years, after being moved out of the starting QB job - so to Bobby: Forget this one and come back and kick butt against Missouri!!

Game Comments:

The Huskers get on the board after the Blackshirts hold Missouri, and then on 4th down the ball is snapped over the head of the Missouri punter, who then knocked it out of bounds for the Safety.

Bobby Newcombe catches his first pass since his change to wingback, but it was called back for a holding penalty. After a punt, the Huskers get the ball back on the Missouri 35 after the Blackshirts again hold Missouri, and then on 4th down the ball is snapped over the head of the Missouri punter AGAIN, who threw an incomplete pass. Matt Davison scores the first TD of the game for the Huskers on a 7 yard pass from Eric Crouch. That is Matt Davison's 2nd career TD, both against Missouri (the first was the miracle catch back in 1997).

On Missouri's third punt, they fake like they were going for it on 4th down, then do a quick kick. They at least moved the ball 20 yards down the field this time, and the Huskers start on their own 22 yard line. We start moving the ball down the field, but Crouch threw an interception and Missouri takes over at their own 19. Julius Jackson then returns the favor, and intercepts Missouri and returns it to the Missouri 31 yard line. Eric Crouch makes up for the interception by running it in 31 yards for the TD, to end the 1st Quarter.

The Huskers start their next drive on their own 13 after a penalty on the kickoff. After several mistakes by both teams, and an exchange of punts, the Huskers get good field position on their own 46 yard line. Josh Brown kicks a 27 yard FG after the offense stalls after driving to the Missouri 13.

The Blackshirts play an excellent first half, holding Missouri to 52 yards in the first half, while the offense has shown signs of life and has scored 3 times, with 196 yards total offense.

Bobby Newcombe catches his first pass for a 53 yard TD. Eric Crouch has now returned the favor Bobby Newcombe did for him a few weeks ago. This is exactly what the Huskers and Bobby Newcombe needed. Bobby also did a good job on the punt return team.

Julius Jackson recovers a Missouri fumble at the Missouri 30 yard line in the 3rd quarter, for his 2nd takeaway of the day. That is 5 takeaways in the last two games. Way to go Julius!! Eric Crouch pitches to Correll Buckhalter for a 10 yard TD run a few plays later.

Correll adds a 57 yard run to the Missouri 1 yard line on the next series, but the Huskers can't get it in after a fumble puts them back on the 12. The 4th down pass went incomplete. Missouri takes over inside their own 5 yard line. Missouri punts a few plays later, and Bobby Newcombe returns it 15 yards to the Missouri 41. Dan Alexander takes it in from the 4 yard line a few plays later, including a good run by Eric Crouch.

Great game for the Huskers after the last few weeks. The offense moved the ball much better, and the Blackshirts dominated again on defense, holding Missouri to only 25 yards rushing and 174 yards of total offense. Missouri gets their only touchdown of the day against the reserves with 2 minutes left in the game. Correll Buckhalter led the team with 132 yards on 14 carries, and Eric Crouch rushed for 92 yards and 1 TD on 15 carries, and was 10 out of 17 passing for 143 yards, 1 interception, and 2 TDs through the air. But most important, the Huskers as a team rushed for 333 yards and had 476 yards of total offense. Not awesome, but good - and a huge improvement over last week. However, while we only lost 1 fumble, we had 5, and at least 2 of the 4 that we didn't lose still killed drives.

The Huskers win their 100th game of the 1990s (Florida State has 101), the 25th straight conference opener, and this was the 21st straight victory over Missouri.

Game Comments: (I was only able to hear some of the 1st half, and missed most of the 2nd, so there are few comments today.)

The Huskers stall on their 1st drive, but get the ball right back after a fumble by OSU with Nebraska getting the ball on their own 49, resulting in a 4 yd TD run by Eric Crouch a few plays later.

The Blackshirts force OSU to go 3 and out, and after a good bounce we get the ball on our own 49. Crouch hits Wistrom for a 47 yard pass, and Correll Buckhalter takes it in from the 2 for the TD. Brian Shaw blocks the OSU punt on the next series, and Correll Buckhalter scores another TD on an 8 yard run on the next play.

Josh Brown adds a 36 yard FG in the 2nd quarter, and then Eric Crouch hits Tracy Wistrom for a 16 yard TD. At the half, the Blackshirts had held OSU to 45 yards total offense.

Eric Crouch was 7 out of 13 for 145 yards passing and 1 TD, and rushed for 61 yards and another TD. Tracy Wistrom had 4 catches for 116 yards, and 1 TD. The Huskers rushed for 240 yards, and passed for 145. Not great numbers, but not bad. Part of the reason is that Coach Solich said they ran more conservative plays in the 2nd half once they had the 38-0 lead, especially after Perino bruised a thigh on his first play as QB in the second half. The Huskers did not turn the ball over today, which is a HUGE improvement. Now we need to work on the penalty situation.

The Huskers have 24 straight victories over Oklahoma State, and have not lost in the last 36 (1 tie in 1973)

Game Comments:

Iowa State, aided by what appeared to be a terrible personal foul call for roughing the passer, moved the ball down to near the Huskers 20, before the Blackshirts slowed things down. Walker sacked the Iowa State QB and stripped the football and recovered on the 35. Alexander scores on a 7 yard run to cap the drive.

ISU starts their next drive on their own 12, and a great hit in the backfield puts them back to the 5. On 4th down, Stella blocks the punt into the end zone, where Ralph Brown falls on the ball for the TD.

Eric Crouch hits Matt Davison for a 47 yard TD for the third score of the 1st quarter. Correll Buckhalter adds a TD in the 2nd quarter on a 7 yard run.

Bobby Newcombe gets a TD reception on a 24 yard pass from Eric Crouch.

Keyuo Craver has a great defensive play to force ISU to punt, and then blocks the ISU punt to give the Huskers the ball on the ISU 25. Eric Crouch takes it in from the 20 a few plays later.

Joe Walker blindsides the ISU QB Walker, and Demoine Adams scoops it up and takes it 37 yards for the 2nd defensive score of the day.

The Huskers played a great game. Dan Alexander and Correll Buckhalter both rushed for over 100 yards, 135 and 127 yards respectively, and Diedrick rushed for 99, and looked very good. Total offense was 524 yards with 439 rushing. 7 different players scored touchdowns, including 2 by special teams and the defense. It is nice to see the scoring being spread around. It also will keep the opposing defenses guessing.

The Huskers had 2 blocked punts. We still need to work on the penalties, but the whole team came together in this one, and played great. Iowa State's 2 touchdowns came against the reserves in the 4th quarter, and the Blackshirts held Darren Davis, the leading rusher in the nation, to 40 yards in the first 3 quarters. He ended up with 107 total, but most of it was against the reserves.

The Huskers have defeated Iowa State 20 of the last 21 times, and today was their 31st consecutive homecoming victory.

Game Comments:

The Blackshirts bend but don't break on the first Texas drive, after Texas drove to the 19, and the Texas FG attempt hits the left upright and bounces NO GOOD!! Then on the Huskers 2nd play, Eric Crouch fumbles and Texas recovers around the Huskers 45. Texas gets the FG this time.

The Huskers go 3 and out on their 2nd drive, and start their 3rd drive on their own 6. The Huskers are on the Texas 32 with a 4th and 3 as the 1st quarter ends. Texas stops Crouch on the 4th down play, and Texas takes over on downs - and then goes 3 and out.

The Huskers take over on their own 12 after the punt. After a couple of runs and a 1st down, Eric Crouch hits Tracy Wistrom on about a 50 yard pass play, and a late hit on Crouch tacks on 15 more, 1st down on the Texas 14. Eric Crouch fumbles again, and Texas recovers on the 20 yard line. The Huskers are now moving the ball, but killing themselves with mistakes. The Blackshirts move Texas backwards, and Texas goes 3 and out again. The Huskers take over on the Texas 17 after a bad punt by Texas. Josh Brown ties it up with a 22 yard FG.

Texas goes 3 and out again. The Huskers take over at their own 36, and they drive to the Texas 15 before Josh Brown comes in and hits a 32 yard FG and gives the Huskers the lead with 2:12 left in the half. Texas goes 3 and out for the 4th straight series - go Blackshirts!! Bobby Newcombe returns the punt 15? yards to the Texas 31. Correll Buckhalter takes it to the 5. Then Correll blasts it in from the 5 for the Huskers 1st TD of the game.

The Huskers start the 2nd half on their own 16, and go 3 and out, and backwards. Texas takes over on the Huskers 35 after the punt out of the end zone. Texas scores the first running TD against the Blackshirts this year.

The Huskers start on their own 12 yard line, and Alexander takes it to the 25 on the 1st play. Eric Crouch takes it 23 yards to the 48. The drive stalls, but at least Texas starts this drive on their own 20 after the punt. Texas gets 1 1st down, but their drive stalls. The Huskers take over on their own 26 after the punt, and then Dan Alexander takes it 29 yards on the 1st play to the Texas 47. The Longhorn defense then stop us on 4th down, and take over. The Longhorn offense move quickly and score on a 13 yard pass and take the lead back, 17-13.

The Huskers move quickly into Texas territory, and have a 1st and 10 on the Texas 44 as the 3rd quarter ends. Eric Crouch hits Tracy Wistrom for about a 37 yard pass to the Texas 6. After a loss of 3, the Huskers burn their 3rd timeout of the 2nd half. Then Correll Buckhalter fumbles and Texas takes over on the 1 yard line. Texas gets a 1st down, but then has to punt and the Huskers start on the Texas 45 yard line. Eric Crouch takes it 12 yards to the 33. Eric Crouch hits Dan Alexander with a shovel pass and Dan takes it 21 yards to the 12. Eric Crouch takes it in from the 10, and the Huskers regain the lead 20-17.

Texas starts on their own 40 after a facemask penalty, then Applewhite completes a 29 yard pass to the 21. Applewhite hits Jones for the TD, and Texas leads 24-20 after a 2 minute drive. The Huskers start on their own 35. On 3rd and 11 from the 34, Eric Crouch hits Matt Davison for a 31 yard pass play, but the officials call it incomplete, but the Huskers get a 1st down on their own 49 because of pass interference on the play. Dan Alexander carries 2 times to the Texas 41 and a first down. The Huskers drive stalls at that point, and turns the ball over to Texas on their 38 with 2:15 to go and no timeouts. Texas runs out the clock, and that is it. Texas wins, 24-20.

The Huskers gave this game away, since they dominated the stats except for one critical category. Turnovers: Texas had 0 turnovers - theHuskers had 5 fumbles, and lost 3, including the one on the 1 yard line. Also, clock management was another critical problem, resulting in the Huskers not having any timeouts left when they needed them at the end of the game - they would have at least had a few shots at the end of the game. I don't mean to take anything away from Texas. They obviously made some adjustments and moved the ball almost without effort on the winning drive. But the Huskers should have been a few TDs ahead at that point. I was concerned about maybe having to play Texas or Texas A&M in the Big 12 Championship game after beating them in the regular season, and I was concerned about that. Now maybe things are reversed, and if we can win the rest of the games and Texas makes it, we can play again before the end of the year. I hope we play better if we do.

Game Comments:

The Huskers attempt to bounce back from their loss to Texas last week, and have made some changes. Correll Buckhalter is starting at I-back, and Dan Alexander has moved to fullback. Also, this is the 94th consecutive meeting between Nebraska and Kansas, the longest streak in Division 1A

The Huskers start off cold, and Kansas is playing hard, with the result that Kansas is leading 2-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. Kansas blocked a punt out of the endzone for a safety. Dan Hadenfeldt had no chance, since the line of scrimmage was the 1 yard line, and somebody from Kansas broke through almost unblocked. The only good thing is that while the Blackshirts are not playing great, they have stopped Kansas when it counted. But Kansas is moving the ball, and we are not. Mike Brown did intercept Kansas to stop one Kansas drive with a great diving interception.

2nd verse, same as the first - except this time Kansas managed to put it in the end zone. The Huskers finally started showing something after Bobby Newcombe returned a punt 29 yards to about the Kansas 40. But the drive stalled after a holding penalty that negated a 1st down on the Kansas 3, and Josh Brown's FG attempt went wide right.

The Huskers start off the 3rd quarter with a 63 yard completion from Eric Crouch to Matt Davison. But Dan Alexander fumbles the ball and Kansas recovers on the one. The Blackshirts stop Kansas from getting anything, and the Huskers take over on the 24 after partially blocking the punt. The Huskers move it to the 9, but we get pushed back 15 yards on penalty, the drive stalls, and Josh Brown hits on a 31 yard FG.

After exchanging punts, Kansas started moving the ball again, and got into Huskers territory, and then the Blackshirts shove Kansas back, forcing Kansas to punt. A good thing, as Bobby Newcombe takes the punt return 86 yards for the TD, giving the Huskers their first lead of the night, 10-9. The Blackshirts stop Kansas again, and the Huskers start in great field position at the 47 after a 21 yard punt return by Joe Walker, as the 3rd quarter ends.

The Huskers drive 53 yards in 7 plays and about 3 minutes with a great 19 yard run by Dahrran Diedrick, and capped off by a 9 yd TD run by Eric Crouch. Kansas comes right back with a 77 yard TD pass and a 2-point conversion to tie it up 17-17. Just when I was starting to breath easier. The Huskers move to the Kansas 27 and then stall, and Josh Brown misses a 43 yd FG just wide left. The Blackshirts force Kansas into a 4th and 19 on the next Kansas drive, and after the punt, the Huskers start on their own 26.

Correll Buckhalter takes it 15 yards to the 41. Correll takes it 6 yds and then 3 yds to the 50. Eric Crouch on 3rd and 1 is stopped 6 inches short (bad spot?). On 4th and 6 inches Frank Solich makes the call to go for it. Crouch takes it for what looked like a yard, but they gave him a foot - which is more than he needed. 1st and 49 - what to do now? Tracey Wistrom takes off down the left hash mark, and Bobby Newcombe down the right hash mark. The Kansas safety has to make the call - and goes for Wistrom. Crouch hits Bobby Newcombe who makes a great move and gets a great block from Matt Davison and takes it in for the TD. YES!! (Loud yells and pounding the walls - good thing I live in a house, not an apartment!!). Josh Brown adds the extra point, and the Huskers take the lead 24-17 with 3:25 left in the game.

The Blackshirts stop Kansas, and they punt to the Huskers with 2:29 left. The Huskers burn 1:36 off the clock, and Kansas gets the ball back on their own 30 with :53 seconds left. The Blackshirts make a couple of key tackles inbounds to keep the clock running, and time runs out.

Game ball goes to Bobby Newcombe - hands down. 200 all-purpose yards (including 89 yards on 4 receptions) and 2 TDs. Great game Bobby!! Eric Crouch was 11 of 20 for 193 yards passing, but only had 14 yards on 13 rushes. Correll Buckhalter rushed 22 times for 116 yards, and Matt Davison made it to the top 5 receivers in Huskers history with his 6 catches for 108 yards. The Huskers had only 173 yards rushing and 15 first downs, but did have 193 yards passing and 199 return yards. Turnovers were even.

This game NEVER should have been this close, but give Kansas credit - they weren't afraid to play us, and they did a great job. And almost pulled it off. However, the Huskers keep their streak alive with the 31st straight victory over Kansas.

Game Comments:

The Huskers start off on the wrong foot, when Bobby Newcombe fumbles on the 1st play of the game, Texas A&M ball on the Huskers 11. The Blackshirts stand tall, force Texas A&M to go 3 and out, and then Kyle Vanden Bosch partially blocks the FG attempt, and the Huskers get a huge break and will start again First and 10 from the 20 after the touchback.

Willie Miller is back at fullback, and gets 5 yards on his first carry. Bobby Newcombe gets 9 yards on his next play, and a first down. Dan Alexander is at I-back, and running well. Aaron Golliday catches a pass for 23 yards, Newcombe catches 1 for about 12. The Huskers great drive stalls at the 5, and then Josh Brown's FG bounces off the goal post. This could be a long game for both teams!!

Or maybe not - Texas A&M takes over on the 20, and on 3rd down, Julius Jackson deflects a pass and Mike Brown intercepts it and retuns it inside the 30. Dan Alexander takes it down inside the 10. Check that first thought - a long day it will be - Willie Miller drops the ball and Texas A&M recovers on their own 8 yard line. After a 1st down, the Blackshirts stop Texas A&M around their own 20, and force the Aggies to punt. The Huskers take over on their own 23, and go 3 and out. Texas A&M takes over on their 43, and lose 6 yards to make it 3rd and 17 as the 1st quarter ends. The Huskers have a 1st quarter edge in Total Offense with 82 yards as compared to A&M's 4 yards.

The Huskers take over on their own 5 after a great punt by the A&M punter, and then go 3 & out. Texas A&M takes over at their own 45. The Aggies are driving, and move down inside the 20 before their drive stalls, and the Blackshirts block another FG!! This game is a strange one, that's for sure. The Huskers take over on their own 27. Tracey Wistrom takes a pass 12 yards to the 39. Crouch takes it 10 yards to the 49 and a 1st down. The drive stalls, and Texas A&M takes over on their own 5 yard line.

The Huskers recover an Aggies fumble on their 1st play, forced by Mike Brown, and take over on the Texas A&M 11 yard line. Josh Brown kicks a 20 yard FG with 5:29 left in the half. Texas A&M goes 3 and out, and the Huskers take over on their 41. Sean Applegate takes a pass 17 yards to the A&M 42. The drive stalls there, the Huskers punt it, and Randy Stella downs it at the 1 yard line! Great play! After a few plays, Mike Brown intercepts again at the 40, and returns it to the 18 yard line! 1:19 left in the half. The Aggie defense holds, and Josh Brown kicks a 31 yard FG.

Texas A&M starts the 2nd half at their own 23. After a 1st down, the Blackshirts move A&M backwards to a 4th and 17. The Huskers take over on their own 45 after the punt. Dan Alexander takes it 8 yards, then a couple, then down to the 30. Dan Alexander to the 15. A holding call moves us back to the 24. Aaron Golliday to the 19. The drive stalls, and Josh Brown hits a 36 yard FG.

Texas A&M starts at their own 16, and move backwards to the 7, and punt from their end zone. The Huskers take over at the A&M 45. Dan Alexander takes it 20 to the 25. Eric Crouch takes it 14 yards to the 11, and a facemask tacks on 5 to the 6 yard line. Alexander takes it the final 6 for the TD!! Great 3 play drive!!

Texas A&M starts at their 17, the Blackshirts force them to go 3 and out again. The Huskers take over at their own 36. Dan Alexander 12 yards to the 48, then 2 to the 50. Bobby Newcombe catches a pass to the 42 and a first down. Eric Crouch 20 yards to the 22. Dan Alexander to the 19. Dan Alexander fumbles at the 1, the ball goes into and out of the end zone, A&M ball after the touchback on the 20. Ralph Brown intercepts around the 40, and runs it back to the 2, and Eric Crouch then runs it in for the TD!!

Texas A&M starts at their 13......Technical difficulties force me to miss 3 minutes of the game..... I think Craver intercepted to stop the Aggies drive at our own 2 yard line, but it may have gone over on downs. Eric Crouch fakes to the fullback and takes it to the 20 yard line. The Huskers call a time out, and then Eric Crouch takes it 63 yards to the 17. Correll Buckhalter takes it to the 13, then the 12. Eric Crouch takes it to the 2. Correll Buckhalter takes it the last 2 yards for the TD!

Texas A&M returns the kick to the 18, but a holding penalty moves it back to the 9. They move the ball forward past the 30, then backwards and end up punting from the end zone. Bobby Newcombe fields it at the 48, and returns it 17 yards to the 35. The Huskers have some subs in, Jeff Perino is at Quarterback. Dahrran Diedrick comes in at I-back. On 4th and 6, Dahrran Diedrick takes it to the 20 and a 1st down. Jeff Perino to the 18. Dahrran Diedrick to the 8. Diedrick to the 3. Dahrran Diedrick takes it in for his 1st career TD! YES!! I like this guy - he may be a great one!!

Texas A&M starts on their own 35 after a kickoff out of bounds. They drive beyond midfield against the subs, but the subs get the sack, and force Texas A&M to punt. This gives the Blackshirts the shutout, their 2nd of the year, and the first shutout of Texas A&M in 11 years! Great game Blackshirts!! 4 interceptions (2 Mike Brown, 1 Ralph Brown, 1 Keogh Craver) and Mike Brown also force a couple of fumbles. Mike Brown had an awesome game. The Blackshirts held Texas A&M to 2 yards rushing, and had 8 sacks. Texas A&M QB Randy McCown had -67 (minus 67!) yards rushing! Total offense for A&M was only 118 yards.

Now for the Offense - the Huskers moved the ball at will all game, but missed several scoring opportunities. However, on the positive side, Eric Crouch rushed for 137 yards on 15 carries. Dan Alexander rushed for 135 yards on 20 carries. 430 yards total offense, 335 yards rushing and 95 passing. Considering the 1st half - not too bad! But, again we fumbled the ball away inside the 5 yard line. That has to stop. And the fumble on the first play of the game - we need to hold on to the ball.

You might notice that each entry in my 2nd half comments starts with the Texas A&M possession, where I usually start each entry with the Huskers information. But the way this game went, I felt that when the Blackshirts were on the field, the way they stopped Texas A&M on most drives was a key to field position and the game. Again, great game Blackshirts!! And thanks for not letting up in the 2nd half, and getting the shutout!

Game Comments:

The Huskers play their biggest game of the year so far, and the first team rated higher than them. This is the last home game of the season, and the 233rd consecutive home sellout. Kansas State wins the toss, and the Huskers start on their 20.

Dan Alexander fumbles on the first play of the game, and Kansas State recovers on the 27. Sound familiar? Just like last week, just a different player losing the ball. Come on Blackshirts! 4th and 5 from the 22, and K-State kicks the FG - BLOCKED!!!! Kyle Vanden Bosch does it again!! Unbelievable!! The Blackshirts ROCK!! The Huskers dodge a bullet, and take over on the 20.

Correll Buckhalter is in the game, and gains 3. Eric Crouch takes it 13 yards to settle things down a bit. 3rd and 7, and Crouch gets the 1st down with the help of a fumble, on the KSU 49. Eric Crouch hits Tracey Wistrom for 14 yards to the 35. The drive stalls, and KSU takes over after the punt on the 20. KSU calls timeout with 3rd down, and punts on 4th down. Bobbie Newcombe returns it 23 yards to the KSU 44. Eric Crouch for 9 yards, then for 5. Eric Crouch takes it 30 yards for the score!

Here's the kick, KSU takes it on the one - FUMBLE!! - Ralph Brown scoops it up around the 25, and takes it to the 1 yard line! Buckhalter fumbles on 1, and KSU takes over inside the 1 yard line. 4th and 9 from the 2 for KSU. Randy Stella blocks the punt out of the endzone for the safety!! Go Blackshirts!!

The Huskers take over on the 27. Dahrran Diedrick is in the game. Eric Crouch hits Tracey Wistrom for 26 yards to the KSU 47. Eric Crouch hits Wistrom again for about 14 to the KSU 29. Dahrran Diedrick for 4, and then for 5. Eric Crouch sneaks to the 18 and the 1st down! 3rd and 10 after 2 incomplete passes. Eric Crouch takes it in from the 18 for the TD on the Quarterback Draw. Great play Eric! 15 seconds left in the 1st quarter. The wind is against us on the kickoff, and David Allen takes it from the 4, and finally is forced out by Dan Hadenfeldt at the KSU 47. Shovel pass to Dahrran Diedrick to the 23, then to the 21, but just short of the 1st down. 4th and inches. The Huskers go for it, and Eric Crouch takes it to the 19, 1st down!! Eric pitches the ball out of bounds, 2nd and 14. Eric Crouch to the 20, 3rd and 11. Eric Crouch gets hit as he throws, but gets it to Tracey Wistrom to the 6, 1st and Goal!! Eric to the 5. With the wind, Dan Hadenfeldt kicks it out of the endzone, so no David Allen return, KSU from the 20. 2 plays to the 30, 1st down. Big run to the 47. KSU is moving the ball, big run by Murphy to the Huskers 30. The Blackshirts stiffen, and KSU has to punt.

Bobby Newcombe returns it to the 17, 3:44 to go in the half. Eric Crouch to the 29. Eric loses 4 to the 25. Eric to the 35, 3rd and 4. Eric gets hit as he throws, incomplete. David Allen waits for the punt. Dan Hadenfeldt booms it over David Allen, no return, KSU takes over at the 20. 3rd and 10, and Murphy takes it to the 32 for the 1st down. KSU uses a jailbreak screen and Beasley hits Morgan and he takes it to the Huskers 18. The Blackshirts stiffen, and it is 4th and 10 for KSU. KSU kicks a 35 yard FG with 0:25 to go in the half.

The Huskers take over on their 20, and they let the half end. In the 1st Half, Eric Crouch is 6 of 12 for 81 yards, and 18 carries for 124 yards and 2 TDs. Tracey Wistrom has 4 catches for 68 yards. The Huskers have 253 yards of total offense, and have 14 1st downs to KSU's 7 (only 1 in the 1st Qtr). The Huskers did not have any penalties in the 1st half (KSU only had 1), but the Huskers fumbled the ball 6 times, and lost 2 of those. Dan Alexander fumbled on the 1st play of the game, and did not play again in the 1st half. Correll Buckhalter fumbled on the 3, and Dahrran Diedrick played the rest of the 1st half. And finally, the crowd seems very loud, and very into the game.

KSU gets the ball to start the 2nd half, and David Allen returns the opening kickoff of the 2nd half to the Huskers 45. Come on Blackshirts! 3rd and 6. KSU gets an intentional grounding penalty, and is forced to punt. The Huskers take over on the 19. Dahrran Diedrick starts the 2nd half, and takes it 10 yards to the 29. Eric Crouch takes it 8 to the 37. Willie Miller takes it to the 42 and a 1st down. Eric Crouch throws an incompletion, then takes it 5 to the 47. Eric Crouch throws a screen pass, it gets deflected, Eric catches it, but it is a loss of 14 to the 33. Dan Hadenfeldt booms it and it goes out of bounds at the KSU 25. The Blackshirts stop Allen for 1, and Beasley throws 2 incompletions. KSU punts, Keyuo Craver almost blocks it, and the Huskers take over on the KSU 37, after the punt of 12 yards off the side of the punters foot. Great defense Blackshirts!!

Dahrran Diedrick for 1. Holding against the Huskers, 2nd and 19 on the 45. Bobby Newcombe to the 42. Eric Crouch tries to hit Bobby Newcombe, a flag is down - facemask. 3rd and 11 at the 37. Eric just overthrows Bobby Newcombe, and Dan Hadenfeldt punts it out of bounds (away from David Allen), and KSU takes over at the 15. The Blackshirts force KSU to go 3 and out again.

Bobby Newcombe returns the punt 9 yards to the Huskers 47. Dahrran Diedrick gets 4 to the KSU 49. The Huskers go 3 and out, and Dan Hadenfeldt can't get the punt away, and KSU takes over at the Huskers 49. Adam Helm is in at QB for KSU. 2nd and 8, and KSU has to burn a timeout. 3rd and 8 after an imcomplete pass. The Blackshirts force another 3 and out after another incomplete pass. The crowd is going nuts!! KSU pulls a fake punt, but Helm throws an incomplete pass on 4th down, and the Huskers take over on the 50. Eric Crouch goes for 7. FUMBLE, but the Huskers keep the ball. Eric gets hit again as he throws, incomplete. The Huskers go 3 and out. Dan Hadenfeldt punts it and the Huskers down it on the 13!! Helm takes it 9 yards to the 22. Allen takes it 3. Adam Helm takes it 16 yards, but fumbles!!

The Huskers take over on the 44. Dahrran Diedrick takes it 12 yards to the 32. Eric Crouch takes it 4 to the 28, and the 3rd qtr ends. 4th Quarter. Dahrran Diedrick takes it 8 yards to the 20, and a first down. Willie Miller for 1. Eric Crouch for 4. Crouch gains 2 and positions the ball for the FG attempt. Josh Brown hits the 30 yard FG! KSU starts on the 29 after the kickoff. Hall runs for 1. Helm throws an incompletion. 3rd and 9. The crowd is into it - going absolutely nuts. Helm throws it - INTERCEPTED by Mike Brown!! The Huskers start on the 46, and Dahrran Diedrick takes it 46 yards for the TD. I told you last week that this guy was going to be a good one! An import from Canada (thanks Canada!), he is just a freshman!! And the crowd is getting even louder - it is now a party!!

KSU starts on their own 38. Helm for no gain. SACK!! 3rd and 18. SACK!! 4th and 26. KSU is forced to punt. AWESOME CROWD AND AWESOME BLACKSHIRTS The Huskers start on their own 38, after Clint Finley recovered Joe Walker's fumble. Then Correll Buckhalter fumbles on his first play since the 1st qtr, and KSU takes over on the 40. They move to the 29, then a penalty pushes them back to the 44. Helm to Morgan for 29 yards. 1st and 10 for KSU at the 15. Helm for 2. 2 incomplete passes. 4th and 8. KSU goes. Helm to Lockett for 9 yards, 1st and goal at the 4. Helm takes it in from the 1, but the 2-pt conversion fails.

KSU goes for the onside kick, and Mike Brown grabs it and takes it to the KSU 32. Dahrran Diedrick for 1. Eric Crouch for 5. Willie Miller takes it 1. The Huskers go for it, Sean Applegate takes it 1, but we turn the ball over on downs. KSU starts on their own 25. Less than 4 minutes left in the game. Helm incomplete. Helm gets crushed by Vanden Bosh, loses the ball, and Eric Johnson takes it 15 yards for the defensive score! The crowds goes crazy!!

KSU starts on their own 41 after the kickoff and a 25 yard return. Helm gets nailed by Julius Jackson for a 6 yard loss. Julius Jackson pressures Helm again on the next play. 3rd and 16. FUMBLE. The Huskers take over on the KSU 35. The subs are in. Jeff Perino is in at QB. Correll Buckhalter is back in at I-back - I wonder if this is an omen that we have a new starting I-back? Correll takes it 3 yards, then 2. Jeff Perino takes it 10 yards to the 20. Jeff Perino loses a yard. And that is it. The Huskers are BACK!! The Blackshirts never left!! And again, the crowd was a big part of this one!! Thanks Husker fans!!

Eric Crouch rushed 27 times for 158 yards and 2 TDs, and was 8 out of 17 for 69 yards passing. His 27 rushes sets a Husker record for rushes by a QB. He is also the first player to rush for over 150 yards in a game for Frank Solich. Dahrran Diedrick rushed 14 times for 93 yards and a TD. The Huskers rushed for 309 yards. The Blackshirts forced KSU starting QB Jonathan Beasley to only 3 completions in 19 attempts, and KSU as a team was 8 out of 32 for 142 yards, and 234 yards total offense. The Huskers won the turnover war 5-3, but actually fumbled the ball 10 (yes ten) times, losing 3 of them. At least penalties were down to just 1.

This was the Huskers last home game of the year, and the victory gives them an undefeated home season for the 23rd time, and the 7th time this decade.

Game Comments:

The Huskers play their last regular season game against a Colorado team that has improved a great deal since the beginning of the year - at Colorado. Ralph Brown is making his 50th consecutive start today - he has started every game during his career at Nebraska.

Gary Barnett and the Colorado gamble with an onside kick to start the game, and the Huskers start at the 50. On the 1st play of the game, Dan Alexander takes it 50 yards for the TD! Colorado goes 3 and out the Huskers start at the 40. Eric Crouch takes it 35 yards, and a 15 yd late hit penalty adds 15, ball on the Buffs 12. Dan Alexander takes it 10 yards to the 2. Dan Alexander takes it the final 2 for the TD! Just over 3 minutes have been played in the game! CU goes 3 and out again.

The Huskers take over on the 19, and start moving. Eric Crouch hits Matt Davison for 23 yds, but the drive stalls. CU takes over on the 16 after the punt, and they go 3 and out. The Huskers start on the 33. After a 1st down, a CU defender hits Eric Crouch as he is handing the ball off, and CU recovers the fumble on the 47. The Blackshirts stop the Buffs, and the Huskers take over on the 20.

Eric Crouch rips off a run of about 50 yards to the Colorado 30. Dan Alexander takes it 9, and then 7, down to the 14. The drive stalls, and Josh Brown kicks a 34 yd FG. Colorado appears to go 3 and out, but pull off a fake punt and resume their drive. The result is a Colorado FG.

The Huskers start on the 20, and on 2-10, Dan Alexander goes 80 yards for the score! That ends the scoring for the 1st half.

The Huskers totally dominate the first half, 312 yards total offense to 127 for Colorado. Dan Alexander has 151 yards rushing and 3 TDs, and Eric Crouch has 107 yards rushing, in the first half.

The third quarter sees both teams trying not to win. The Huskers seem to be playing conservatively, and both teams turn the ball over. A 59 yard punt by Dan Hadenfeldt is one highlight. A 37 yard Josh Brown FG is another.

Colorado owns the 4th quarter, scoring 24 unanswered points to tie the game 27-27. The only bright spot is that Colorado misses the FG at the end of regulation, to send the game into overtime. The most annoying spot was when my older brother called from Colorado after they scored to make it 27-20. I said don't bother me during the game. How annoying! Of course, the way Colorado has played over the years, I haven't heard from him often!! Anyway, the 4th quarter started with Colorado kicking a FG. The Huskers start on their own 24 and go three and out. Dan Hadenfeldt punts a 50 yarder, and Colorado starts on the 18 and goes 3 and out. On the next drive for the Huskers, Bobby Newcombe fumbled the ball (NOT!) and Colorado recovered on the Huskers 47. Watching the replays, it sure looked to me like Bobby's knee was down before the ball came loose. Anyway, Colorado converted it into a TD. The Huskers start on their 30 and go 3 and out. CU then starts on their 20 and drives for another TD - on a hail Mary pass thrown into the end zone. During the drive Mike Brown is hit with a roughing the passer penalty that was totally bogus. It looked like a good hit to me, and even the announcers were questioning the call. Colorado goes for the onside kick - and gets it this time. They score the TD that ties it up with 2:59 left in the game. The Huskers punt the ball again, and Dan Hadenfeldt puts CU back on the 5. Mike Brown strips the ball and Keyuo Craver recovers. But on the next play, Dan Alexander fumbles the pitch, and Colorado is back in business. They drive down and with :01 left on the clock, attempt a FG that sails just wide right! We are going to OT!

Colorado gets a FG on their overtime series. The Huskers win the game with Eric Crouch sneaking in from the 1, after Dan Alexander had an 11 yard run to set up the TD.

Two huge problems in this game: 1) Conservative game play in the 2nd half instead of going all out, and 2) fumbles, fumbles, fumbles (8 fumbles with CU recovering 5). Although I still say Bobby Newcombe's knee was down before he fumbled. Well, we are in the Big 12 championship game, but with the Texas loss to Texas A&M, Virginia Tech's victory, and our close came, I doubt we have a chance to be in the National Championship game - and maybe that is exactly the way it should be.

On the bright side, we are 10-1. Who would have thought the way this season started that we would be 10-1! Not that bad at all. We are the champs of the Big 12 North, and are going to the Big 12 Championship next Saturday. Dan Alexander did have some fumbles, but had a career high 180 yards on 17 carries, and Eric Crouch had 123 yards on 19 carries. Dan Hadenfeldt had a great day, punting 7 times for an average of 57.6, with his longest being 67, and another was 64. 6 of the 7 punts were over 50 yards. and Dan put Colorado inside their 20 5 times. During the first half, the Huskers looked awesome. In the second half, they looked complacent, and Colorado came alive. I would also give the Colorado fans credit - they were still very much into the game even when they were down 27-3 at the end of the 3rd quarter - they believed they could come back.

Congrats to the Huskers for pulling this one out in overtime! You had it when it counted! The 8th straight victory over Colorado!

And no, my older brother never did call back from Colorado after the game - oh well!!

Game Comments:

The Huskers play Texas in San Antonio for the Big 12 Championship. Tracey Wistrom is not suiting up today because of a knee injury suffered in practice on Monday.

The Huskers start off on offense after Joe Walker returns the kickoff only to the 10. Dan Alexander takes it 18 yards on the first play. Correll Buckhalter takes it for 16, and Miller for 11, before the drive stalls and Dan Hadenfeldt puts Texas on their own 10. Texas goes 3 and out, and they punt.

Joe Walker returns the punt 27 yards to the Texas 38, with the help of a great block by Bobby Newcombe. Dan Alexander for 1, Eric Crouch to Matt Davison for 8, Eric Crouch sneaks for the 1st down. The drive stalls, and Josh Brown kicks the 42 yd FG. Texas goes 3 and out, and punts.

The Huskers start off on their own 49. Miller for 6, a loss of 3, Newcombe for 5. 4th and 1 and the Huskers go for it. Eric Crouch takes it 31 yards for the TD!! Texas start at the 20, then is moved to the 15 on a false start penalty. Vanden Bosch tackles for a 3 yard loss. Ralph Brown knocks down a pass on 3rd and 8, and Texas goes 3 and out and punts.

The Huskers and go 3 and out, as the 1st quarter ends. Texas takes over after the punt on their own 35. Texas is driving and has moved the ball to the Huskers 22. Jackson and Vanden Bosch combine on an 8 yard sack. Jackson stops Texas for another 2 yard loss. After an incomplete pass, Texas goes for the 49 yard FG and it misses wide right, and maybe short as well.

The Huskers start on their own 32. Correll Buckhalter for 4, Miller for 4, then Eric Crouch for 11 to the Texas 49. Correll Buckhalter for 19 to the 30. Eric Crouch complete to Bowling for 22 to the Texas 8. Texas intecepts and Texas takes over on their own 9. A play or two later, Ortiz picks off Texas and we are back in business. The Huskers don't get the 1st down, but Josh Brown boots the 21 yard FG and the The Huskers lead 13-0.

Texas takes over at the 20, and again gets moved back to the 15 on a penalty. Ralph Brown knocks down another pass, and then Applewhite throws an incompletion. It is 3-15 from the 15. The ball is snapped past Major Applewhite and heads for the endzone, where Ralph Brown makes a move on it, but Major Applewhite on a great play saves the TD by slapping the ball off of Ralph Brown and the ball goes out of the end zone for the Safety. The Huskers lead 15-0.

Bobby Newcombe returns the free kick about 50 yards from the 28, but a penalty moves the ball back to the Huskers 46. The Huskers can't move the ball, and Texas takes over on the 25 after the punt. Texas goes 3 and out and the Huskers take over on their own 19, and go 3 and out as well. Texas takes over on the 30. The Blackshirts sack Applewhite again, and it is 4th and 20. Bobby Newcombe returns the punt 26 yards and the Huskers have it on the Texas 29, with about a minute left in the half. Eric Crouch hits Matt Davison to the 18. The drive stalls, and Josh Brown attempts the 38 yarder, and he thought it was good, but the officials say it went just wide left. Texas downs the ball to end the half. The Blackshirts are playing an awesome game, stunting and moving around and keeping Major Applewhite and Texas confused and off balance. On the down side, Dan Alexander is out with a badly cut right hand, which required stitches. I am not sure what he cut it on.

Texas starts the 2nd half on their 20, and after a big 20 yard run on 2nd and 7, Mike Brown gets the sack, and Texas is forced to punt. The Huskers have it on their 35. Correll Buckhalter for 6, Miller for 1, and then Correll Buckhalter rumbles up the middle and down the field for 55 yards all the way down to the Texas 3 yard line. Eric Crouch on the option keeps the ball and goes in from the 3 for the TD!! We are just under 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter, and the Huskers lead 22-0.

Texas and the Huskers exchange punts, and then Texas starts a drive, including a 29 yard pass to Cavil from Applewhite. Finally, Ralph Brown picks it off at the 10 yard line, and returns it to the Huskers 27. Correll Buckhalter for 22 to the 49. Eric Crouch for 12 to the 39. The drive stalls, and the Huskers punt. Texas takes over on the 14. Vanden Bosch sacks Applewhite back on the 10. Applewhite completes an 18 yard pass for the 1st down as the 3rd quarter ends. The Blackshirts then stop them, and Texas punts. Diedrick is in, and fumbles the ball, and Texas takes it in for the TD just 1:34 into the 4th quarter. Texas fails to get the 2 point conversion.

Joe Walker has a good kick return to the 31 (first contact was at the 10), where the Huskers go 3 and out. Dan Hadenfeldt gets off a good punt, but Texas starts on their 34. On 3rd and 5 Ralph Brown breaks up another pass, and Texas has to punt. The Huskers go 3 and out, and Texas gets the ball on their 24. Vanden Bosch recovers a Texas fumble on the Texas 18, under 8 minutes to go in the game. Eric Crouch for 5, Correll Buckhalter loses a yard, and then Eric Crouch gets the 1st down on a great 7 yard run to the 7. On 1st and goal, Eric Crouch bobbles the snap, and Texas takes over on their 6. Applewhite completes a 15 yarder, but then the Blackshirts get tough, and apply tons of pressure as Applewhite throws 3 incompletions and Texas has to punt.

The Huskers start on their 47 after the punt and a Craver return. 3 running plays to keep the clock running, and the Huskers punt. Texas takes over on their 22 with 2:26 left. A few plays later it is 1st and 10 on the 35 with 2:07 left. Applewhite completes a 21 yard pass to the Huskers 44. After a holding call against the Huskers, the ball is on the 34. With under 2 minutes to play, Applewhite goes to the end zone. Ralph Brown is a half step behind but maintains his composure, turns, and almost intercepts but the Texas player is all over him. That's OK though - the ball bounces up off of Ralph Brown into the arms of Booker in the endzone, who intecepts and returns the ball to the 32. Eric Crouch takes a knee a few times, and the Huskers win it 22-6!!

The Huskers are the 1999 Big 12 Conference Champions, and this is their 43rd Conference Championship and the 1st under 2nd year head coach Frank Solich. The Blackshirts played an awesome game: Major Applewhite was 15 out of 42 and 3 interceptions for only 164 yards, the first time in 22 starts that Applewhite was held under 200 yards passing. The Blackshirts also sacked Applewhite 7 times. The Blackshirts also get the defensive shutout, since the only Texas points came against the offense on the fumble return. The offensive numbers weren't that great: 234 yards rushing, and only 55 passing for a total of 289, but it was enough. Correll Buckhalter rushed 20 times for 136 yards, and Eric Crouch rushed for 72 yards on 23 carries, and completed 6 of 14 for 55 passing. But again, the Huskers turned the ball over inside the opponents 10 yard line 2 times, and that is really hurting our scoring. But enough of the negative - we won!!

Congrats Huskers on the victory. The Huskers beat everybody they played (the only loss game earlier in the season to Texas), and are the 1999 Big 12 Conference Champions. Now we can only wait to see what happens in
